Trinity College Lismore Appeal

The devastating flood waters that inundated Lismore in recent days have completely covered Trinity Catholic College, causing damage to every classroom, staff area and facility. Whilst the town and College are used to floods and are well prepared for such events, the magnitude of this flood is beyond anything previously experienced. The destruction at the College is significant and the hardship on many hundreds of College families is acute, reflecting the situation for communities throughout the northern rivers region of NSW and southeast Queensland.

As fellow Marists, as we watch and listen to the news reports, we are compelled to ask, 鈥淗ow can we help?鈥 One practical way is to provide financial support to the College community in order to help rebuild their school and more importantly the lives of the people who are Trinity Catholic College.

Thank you for your support of our Trinity College Lismore Appeal, everyone’s contribution will go a long way to supporting the community. If anyone wishes to make a further donation please contact me or money can be brought in on Monday.

Shrove Tuesday & Ash Wednesday鈥

Shrove Tuesday is the day prior to the beginning of the Lenten period which commences with Ash Wednesday. Pancakes were sold across the College to begin our fundraising for Project Compassion and are eaten on this day as a symbol to represent our commitment to fast, give alms and pray during Lent.

Although COVID restrictions meant we couldn鈥檛 gather as a whole school to acknowledge the beginning of Lent, we were able to move our Ash Wednesday Liturgy online. Students were able to receive ashes following the latest COVID advice that was distributed via the Vatican, with a sprinkle on the head. Classroom teachers and PCG teachers, led students through a liturgy prepared by our Year 6 students in the primary and the Faith & Liturgy and Social Justice Captains in the secondary. Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent and a time when we can reset our relationships with God, others, self and creation.

We are encouraged to do this through prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Students across the College will be encouraged to give generously to Project Compassion again in 2022.

Project Compassion鈥

Our Vision for Mission calls us to serve humanity and raise up those experiencing poverty. At 秀秀直播, we commit to supporting Caritas鈥 Project Compassion every year during Lent. This is an opportunity for our school to raise funds to support under privileged societies around the world.

The theme of Project Compassion 2022 is For All Future Generations. Together, we can create lasting change for people living in some of the most vulnerable and low-income regions in the world.

Caritas Fast鈥

Project Compassion brings thousands of Australians together in solidarity with the world’s poor to help end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity. This year, in support of Project Compassion, students are invited to participate in the

Caritas Fast鈥
To be held on Tuesday 22 March 2022 (Week 8)

Students participating will be given barley sugars at recess and a handful of cold, cooked rice at lunch. This small amount of food will help those participating appreciate how little some people in our world must eat.

Important Details:

  • Students wishing to participate will register with their PCG teacher by Monday 14th March.
  • Students participating in the Fast are asked to collect a minimum of $10 each.
  • Students who have raised $10, and are participating in the Fast, may wear Guild uniform on the day.
  • Students should use the sponsor sheet to record the amount pledged by each person donating ()

Confirmation Retreat

On a fun-filled Thursday, 3rd March 2022 a group of 24:7 Youth Ministry volunteers came to each class to teach the students about Confirmation and how to prepare to receive the Sacrament.

For the whole day they engaged us with fun, yet educational activities. The staff members were kind and friendly with a passion to teach and a positive mindset. We were given a friendly introduction before being split into smaller groups with a leader for each group.
Students were given tasks and worksheets to discuss in their small groups. Now it wasn鈥檛 all just work. We would take small breaks in between tasks to reset our mind and have some fun too.

We learnt many things during this retreat such as, the seven sacraments and what each mean as well as the gifts of the Holy Spirit and how you can use them to become a better person.

One of the best parts was definitely lighting the candles. Students lined up to receive a candle while the others prayed the Rosary. Students would light their small candles from a large candle. Once all the candles were lit, the illuminating glow helped us feel the warmth of God.

The Year 6s would like to thank 24:7 Youth Ministry for all the work they put into our lovely retreat. We would also like to that all the teachers who helped give us this amazing opportunity. This experience was fantastic and one we will always remember.

Service Learning鈥

In Term 1, 秀秀直播 will be launching the Christian Service-Learning Program for Year 7, 8 and 9 students, 鈥淟iving Marist鈥. Our Vision for Mission: to form Good Christians and Good Citizens, seeks to create within our students a spirit of service and compassion for the most vulnerable in our community.

This program is based on the Catholic Social Teachings and the imperatives of Jesus to serve others. Students will participate in a variety of experiences, be given opportunities to discern and reflect on their experiences and be encouraged to take further action in the community.

秀秀直播 News Term 1 Week 6 : From the Vice Principal

Welcome to autumn! Thinking about autumn can bring about enjoyable thoughts of amber leaves, cooler temperatures, and pretty scenery. Autumn, more than any other season, is a season of change and transformation. The symbolic associations of the leaves falling alongside the temperature, hints to us that letting go is an inevitable process in the seasons of life. The symbolic associations of autumn are a strong reminder that mother mature has an enormous influence on our lives. The disruptions of the last two weeks have continued to challenge our entire community. The constant change and impermanence of the situation are stark reminders of the importance of embracing the Marist characteristics of family spirit, presence, and simplicity.

I have been amazed by the resilience of our students, staff and families in responding to change.  Resilience can be defined as the capacity to recover from difficulties. Resilience is not a bobo doll, where you are pushed down one minute and spring up the next. Rather, resilience is more like climbing a mountain trail, without necessarily knowing the direction. It takes endurance, time, faith, patience and most importantly, support from the people that surround you. Setbacks are inevitable, but the joy of reaching the top of the mountain and celebrating together by looking back, makes the journey worthwhile.

As we reflect on what has been the first half of Term One, for our school, WA and the world, we have a sense that our resilience is being developed and stretched. Through collaboration and challenge, we do have faith that we will be able to celebrate our journey and the gifts of resilience at a future point. This week was a turning point for the schooling guidelines for those identified as close contacts of COVID cases, whereby staff and students who are not household close contacts can return to school under certain conditions. The College will continue to provide online learning options for those students who are household close contacts remaining in isolation.

Please check our website regularly for our COVID updates.

Key Dates

鈥 In recent times, our school calendar has changed regularly.  Incursions, Excursions, Retreats, Carnivals, Year 12 Ball, to name a few, have all had to be cancelled/postponed or delivered in a different format.  We sincerely thank you for your understanding and support. We encourage you to continue to look at the online College calendar as entries are updated daily.

Parent Teacher Interviews Y7/11/12

Online interviews took place last night for students in Years 7, 11 and 12.  A big thank you to our parents, students, and staff for adapting to this different mode of delivery. We will be reviewing the process and format with the view to continually improve in our flexible offerings to families and teachers. If you have any suggestions on the format, please email lucie.mccrory@newman.wa.edu.au.

秀秀直播 News Term 1 Week 6 : From the Principal

International and National Disasters

The last two weeks have seen the world change again with the conflict in Ukraine and the natural disaster in the Eastern States.  It is difficult to imagine the trauma and tragedy that has resulted from these events.  The Marist theme for 2022 Known and Loved Dignity for all invites us to reflect on the beauty of human life.  The privilege we have in our country is that war and destruction of life is not on our doorstep.  However, it is important that we as a community recognise our place in the world and that we offer our ongoing prayers and thoughts for this community.

Our Brother and Sister school in Lismore, Trinity College, has been devastated by the floods of northeast NSW.  The school is uninhabitable and there is limited prospect of students returning in the short term.  Through the Marist Fundraising Appeal, the College has been able to actively contribute funds to supporting this community in their endeavours to restore teaching and learning onsite (please see Ministry section for more detail).  Thank you to everyone who donated to this appeal.

Ms Julie Ryan, Marist Schools Australia Regional Director

We were most fortunate to have received a visit from Julie Ryan this week, her first visit to Perth since May 2021.  The purpose of Julie鈥檚 trip was to visit the school and meet with the College Leadership Team, staff and students.  In addition, Julie and I met with the Executive Director CEWA, Dr Debra Sayce and Vicar for Education and Faith Formation Archdiocese of Perth, Fr Vincent Glynn, to discuss the College鈥檚 position with Catholic Education WA and our role as a Catholic school within the Archdiocese of Perth.

Julie has recently confirmed her intention to conclude in her current role at the end of June 2022 and commence richly deserved retirement from full time work. Her support of 秀秀直播 has been untiring over the past 5 years ensuring visits to the West 3-4 times per year.  We look forward to farewelling Julie as a College at the end of Term 2.

COVID-19 Update

The disruption caused by COVID-19 in our Community persists as case numbers increase in the wider community and changes to social measures and contact tracing evolve.  Please click here to view the College鈥檚 latest update.

I wish to commend the students for their resilience and adaptability as changes to their day-to-day life occur.  The wearing of masks of our Primary students has been embraced and I thank families for supporting the College鈥檚 enacting WA Health regulations as they are rolled out.

The College now has a dedicated COVID-19 team dealing specifically with COVID-19.  An email address has been set up to enable families to send any queries or report a positive case to our team through this email – covid@newman.wa.edu.au

Events

Although many restrictions have been placed on events so far this term it was wonderful to see today students in action at our Years 3-6 Faction Swimming Carnival.  Our students, over and over again, have risen to the occasion and continue to display a strong spirit, passion and commitment to their school.

NPCC, Monday 14 March, 4.45pm

I encourage members of our College community to attend the online NPCC meeting on Monday evening, the focus of which will be the College鈥檚 Annual School Improvement Plan 2022 and processes in managing the outbreak and its impact at 秀秀直播.  A SMS will be sent out on Monday including the link, or you can join by

秀秀直播 News Term 1 Week 6: From the Deputy Principal Secondary

This week I met with our College Captains, Isabella O鈥橰ourke and Joshua Downes. Under the guidance of Leadership Coordinator, Miss Guzzomi the Year 12 Student Leadership Team have certainly started strong. The enthusiasm for their roles and the commitment to school improvement is sensational and I cannot wait to see their vision become a reality for 秀秀直播 throughout 2022. This meeting was definitely the highlight of my week, reminding me how fortunate our staff are to work with 秀秀直播 students who let their light shine in all that they do.

Year 7 Parent Information Presentation & Subject Expo

Year 7 Parent Information Presentation and Subject Expo were made available online last week. The presentation contains important information for the year ahead. I encourage all Year 7 students to watch the video with their families.

Student Use of E-cigarettes:

Unfortunately, reports of students using e-cigarettes (vapes) at school has increased. I reminded students at our online Marcellin assembly on Monday morning, that possession or use of a vape on College grounds or in College uniform is a serious breach of College policies and will result in a student鈥檚 enrolment at the College being suspended immediately.

We are committed to the health, safety, and wellbeing of all students at 秀秀直播 and this behaviour does not contribute to a safe or healthy culture. I also encourage students who may witness this behaviour to speak to the Leader of Wellbeing so it may be followed up accordingly. For further information about e-cigarettes and the health impacts of vaping please

Guild Cross Country

The Guild Cross Country Carnival has been rescheduled to Friday 18 March. Students are permitted to wear their Guild Uniform for the day and are encouraged to put on sunscreen before their event. Students will have an opportunity to hear from guest speakers and participate in team activities which focus on positive approaches to leadership, creative ways to undertake teamwork and communication and coaching skills.

Year 9 WW1 Artefacts

This week the Y9s have been learning all about WW1 and we were lucky enough to have been loaned some artefacts from the museum to have a look at. Historian Lucy Lane has been brilliant with the students walking them through the significance of each piece.

Year 12 Geography

On Tuesday 8th March, at a very early hour, students studying 12 General Geography ventured off on a field excursion to Cunderdin and Meckering. The towns are located 200km east of Perth, and are the sites of the 1968 Meckering earthquake.

The students were able to experience what it felt like during the earthquake in the 鈥榚arthquake house鈥 at the Cunderdin museum. Students then headed back to Meckering and were further fascinated to learn more about the earthquake by exploring the bent railway track, crushed water pipe and the old town site. Finally, before heading back to Perth, the students developed their field skills, creating a sketch map of the uplift of the land, which is still evident today.

We were all amazed to be standing on rock, the Yilgarn Craton, that is 2.8 billion years old.

秀秀直播 News Term 1 Week 4: From the Director of Mission and Catholic Identity

The faith life of our College continues to strive as we look to offer authentic experiences for our students in line with our Vision for Mission: to form good Christians and good Citizens. Our staff and students have continued to reflect on our Marist Theme: Known and Loved 鈥 Dignity for All as we consider how we respond to the current challenges posed in schools through our Marist Characteristics. The following reflection was shared with staff and students on Monday. .

Key Dates 鈥 2022

Click here to view the College Calendar.

Year 12 Retreat

A different experience for our students in 2022, yet still powerful and life giving. Students engaged in a variety of activities that encouraged them to reflect on who they are, what they value and the type of person they want to be. I wish to thank PCG and other staff who attended the three days and journeyed with our students in the conversation. Particular thanks to Mat Puljiz, Leader of Wellbeing Year 12, Aleisha Bryson, Leader of Youth Ministry & Advocacy, Liam Street, Marist Youth Minister, Donna McFadden, Canteen Manager and the Maintenance Team.

Community Mass

Mass continued in Week 4 and will continue on Thursday morning for particular year groups. This is only open to staff and students at 秀秀直播. Unfortunately, parents are not able to attend at this time due to current restrictions. We welcome local parish priests who continue to serve our 秀秀直播 community and offer spiritual nourishment for our community.

Project Compassion 2022

The theme for 2022 is .  Caritas is responsible for supporting many communities around the world and Project Compassion is their main fundraiser to support their projects.

During lent we will be joining many Australians in raising money for Project Compassion and the funds raised will help support vulnerable communities around the world to tackle poverty, food security, education, water and sanitation and disaster risk reduction to build a better future for all.

Lent

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Church鈥檚 season of Lent. In 2022 Ash Wednesday is 2 March 2022. As a Catholic community, Lent prepares us for the season of Easter, the most important time in the Church鈥檚 calendar. It encourages us to spend time in prayer, fasting and almsgiving and by doing so we are reminded Jesus鈥 death and resurrection. Jesus brought the promise of hope to all people so that we may 鈥淗ave life and have it to the full.鈥 (John 10:10).

Shrove Tuesday

The Catholic Church has a tradition to celebrate Shrove Tuesday prior to Ash Wednesday. Shrove Tuesday is a day to celebrate before we begin the season of fasting. Historically, it has been celebrated by eating pancakes. We will be selling pancakes on Tuesday 1 March across the College to begin our fundraising for Project Compassion and to continue this fun tradition of our Church.

Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday will be celebrated across the College through classroom teachers and PCG teachers. Students will be able to receive ashes following the latest covid advice that was distributed via the Vatican on how to appropriately distribute ashes. Marian and Lavalla students will be celebrating their liturgy at the beginning of the day. Marcellin students will be celebrating during extended PCG.

Confirmation Retreat

On Thursday 3 March, our Year 6 students will be participating in their Confirmation Retreat, facilitated by 24:7 Youth Ministry. This is an opportunity to reflect on what it means to receive the sacrament of Confirmation and how this will impact their life. This is a significant moment in the life of our Year 6 students, and I encourage all our parents to begin the conversation with their child about their sacramental journey.
