Year 7 Elevate Education

On Tuesday evening, Elevate Education ran an information seminar with our Year 7 parents. Elevate Education will be working with our Year 7 students in 2022 to deliver targeted study skills. On Tuesday evening Elevate focused on key skills for success such as time management and setting up a study timetable. Thank you to those families who were able to join us.

Elevate has given 秀秀直播 parents access to the student portal. For further tips and resources, please , select the student portal and enter the password rondo.

During Extended PCG on Wednesday, our Year 7 students had their first workshop with Elevate. This was a Study Skills Kick Start workshop aimed at covering the following skills:

  • Dynamic Reading: How to read a text and pull out the key points, not just summarise every sentence.
  • Note Taking: How to get those ideas the students have extracted from their readings into an organised set of notes that will facilitate effective
    learning.
  • Conceptual Learning: Teaching students how to break the information into its relevant parts as opposed to simply rote learning the material.
  • Independent Learning: What independent learning means and how to get it done.

Elevate will return to work with our Year 7s on Time Management in Term 2.

COVID Mitigation Strategy

Masks:

I would like to thank students for their cooperation with always wearing their masks correctly indoors. At an online assembly with Marcellin students on Monday, I reminded the students of one of the definitions of a close contact; face-to-face 15 minutes or more with an infectious person, where a mask was not worn by the exposed person or the person with COVID-19. With this in mind and to minimise the chance of contracting COVID-19 or being considered a close contact, I have encouraged students wear their masks outdoors if they are sitting with friends, have finished eating and physical distancing is not possible.

From Monday, all students will be required to wear their masks while in line for the canteen.

Remote Learning:

Over the last two week, students have had to access learning remotely for various reasons. If your child is required to work from home in the near future, please click here.

OLNA

To demonstrate the required literacy and numeracy standards for the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE), students are required to achieve Band 8 or higher in their Year 9 NAPLAN. In instances where this has not been achieved, students are required to complete the Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (OLNA) in Year 10, 11 or 12.

There are two rounds each year where students can attempt (or reattempt) the OLNA, meaning there are up to six opportunities before the end of Year 12 to meet the required literacy and numeracy standards.

The OLNA is comprised of three assessments: Writing and Numeracy and Reading. Students may be required to sit one, two or all three, of the assessments depending on their individual NAPLAN results.

The assessment format is as follows:

The first OLNA round for 秀秀直播 will commence next week

Parents have received a letter directly from the College informing them if their child is specifically required to complete one, two or three OLNA. Students have also received a personalised timetable which outlines the information above.

There are a range of supports available for students as they prepare for the OLNA which include access to an online revision subscription as well as in-class assistance and increased availability of tutors at Homework Club.

If you require any further information about OLNA, please do not hesitate to contact the Director of Transformational Learning PK-12, Jenny Miraudo.

Year 7 Information Presentation and Subject Expo:

The Year 7 Parent Information Presentation and Subject Expo will be made available online to families on Thursday 3 March. The Subject Expo aims to give families information on the various subjects studied in Year 7.

A link will be sent to families on the evening of each presentation and it is encouraged that students watch the presentations with their parents.

秀秀直播 News Term 1 Week 4: From the Deputy Principal Primary

I was recently reading the book 鈥淒on鈥檛 sweat the small stuff鈥 by Richard Carlson and I reflected on the chapter titled 鈥楢llow yourself to be bored鈥. Immediately, I could see the relevance that this has in the lives of our students. Carlson outlines how by allowing ourselves to feel bored, these feelings will eventually be replaced by feelings of peace and then eventually, we learn to relax. The chapter discussed how much of our anxiety and inner struggle stems from 鈥渙ur busy, ative minds always needing something to entertain them, something to focus on, and always wondering 鈥淲hat鈥檚 next?鈥.

In our increasingly digitised world, we are seeing an increase in children鈥檚 levels of anxiety. Perhaps this can be attributed to the lack of boredom that children are exposed to, when they have high levels of access to gaming and digital medias? A recent report by the discusses the link between children鈥檚 mental health and the amount of time spent online by children, and certainly provides some food for thought.

Providing children with unscheduled opportunities of downtime where they can unplug and relax, is so important. I would also strongly encourage families to set clear and specific boundaries around the amount of time your child spends connected to digital technology, as well as what they can access.

Last year, the College was fortunate to have Taryn Wren from ySafe present at one of the 秀秀直播 Parents information evenings. The website has some fantastic resources to assist parents in navigating this complex area. I encourage you to explore the resources, and in particular the 2 blogs and .

If you are unfamiliar with how to set up parental controls on your child鈥檚 iPad, this provides detailed instructions on how to go about it. Your child鈥檚 classroom teacher is also a valuable asset in your partnership with establishing clear and consistent boundaries and expectations.

Parent Information Presentations

Information evenings for all of our year groups went online this year. A copy of each of the presentations is available below. Please use the links to access individual presentations.

Pancake Tuesday

To raise money for Caritas鈥 Project Compassion, students across PK-6 will be able to purchase a pancake on Tuesday 1 March. Marian Campus students should bring $2 to their classroom teacher if they would like to purchase a pancake at recess time. Lavalla students will be able to purchase pancakes at recess for $2 each or 3 pancakes for $5.

Please refer to the correspondence sent via Seesaw and email for further information.

Confirmation Retreat

This term our Year 6 students have been learning about the Sacrament of Confirmation, in preparation to receive the sacrament later in the year. Next Thursday, March 3, our Year 6 students will be participating in a Confirmation Retreat, facilitated by 24:7 Youth Ministry. This fun and engaging retreat is an opportunity for our students to join in several activities to deepen their understanding of the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Dance Troupe Auditions

The 秀秀直播 Dance Troupe provides keen dancers with a variety of performance opportunities throughout the year, as well as the opportunity to collaborate with like-minded dancers. Miss Missell (Dance and Drama Teacher PP- Yr 6) will be holding auditions for the Primary Dance Troupe Year 5 & 6 only, on Wednesday 27 April at 7.00am in the Marist Auditorium.

Students who are successful in their audition will be invited to join the Dance Troupe and they will be expected to attend rehearsals each week, on Wednesday mornings at 7.30am.

If your child would like to audition please email Miss Rimmell directly via remmi.missell@newman.wa.edu.au

Absentee Process

If your child is unwell and unable to attend school, parents are reminded to advise the school via email at absenteeprimary@newman.wa.edu.au. Please state the reason for your child鈥檚 absence (eg. unwell, medical appointment etc).

We have found that some families are emailing their child鈥檚 classroom teacher directly. This then results in our Administration staff needing to send absentee alerts to families and follow-up these absences unnecessarily. Thank you for your support.

秀秀直播 News Term 1 Week 4 : From the Vice Principal

The last two weeks have been even busier than usual, which I did not think was possible! Perhaps this is due to, at least in part, teachers, students and families being called to respond to the current frustrating societal covid situation with flexibility, understanding, calmness and acceptance.

Teaching staff have had to look to sustainable teaching practices that allow students to experience uninterrupted learning, should they be called to isolate for a short period of time and learn from home. This is a time-consuming task for a teacher, particularly for those who teach for the full day, with students present in front of them. Likewise, students learning from home have had to exercise greater levels of independence and organisation for the period of isolation. In our Primary setting, our parents may need to step into the role of learning facilitator (whilst also trying to work from home) to see their child through the isolation period. We are thankful for our partnerships with parents, we need each other to successfully navigate the educationally disruptive waters.

In the coming weeks we may need to ask whole classes to isolate in the Primary school or collections of students in the secondary school. The College has continuation of learning plans in place for each scenario. The types of learning that the students will engage in will be dependent on whether the bulk of the class is at school, or at home. Please see our communication from our Director of Transformational Learning, Mrs Jenny Miraudo, on the continuation of learning for each scenario. More information can also be found on the College website under our Remote Learning Plans for each year group.

The College is continuously looking for processes and practices that will support teacher and student wellbeing, as we move more into what can be described as a hybrid learning environment. Our learning platforms of Teams, OneNote, SEQTA and Seesaw will assist us to deliver education to students, regardless of their physical whereabouts. Interestingly, ) undertook a study which investigated the skills that are best learnt in the digital and physical world 鈥 independently at home and face to face at school. Admittedly, the results of this study are more relevant for our older students. The results can be viewed below.

We trust that our experiences, whilst challenging, will bear fruit at a future stage and that we can be grateful for the support we have in each other as one Marist educational family. We value simplicity and presence as a community, these qualities are particularly relevant today.

Key Dates

鈥 College events are changing very quickly, and we ask all families check the online calendar frequently.

Review of the Children鈥檚 Crossing, Tuscany Way near Mantua Crescent

The above crossing is currently being reviewed by the Children鈥檚 Crossing and Road Safety Committee.  Two sets of surveys will be conducted.  Please encourage students to utilise the facility so that a true picture of the school community鈥檚 needs may be gathered.

秀秀直播 Parents Consultative Committee (NPCC) Meeting 鈥 Monday 14 March (Online)

These meetings are convened by the鈥疨rincipal and attended by various members of the College Leadership Team. The group provides an avenue for parent voice and operates as a forum for parents to gain insight into our school improvement plan. The NPCC serves to help advance the best interests of those within our College Community. Whilst policy is determined and set by the College Executive and supported by the Advisory Council, the NPCC is a critically important group in providing input and feedback.  The topics for discussion include the annual school improvement plan and Covid experiences and risk mitigation measures.

A meeting reminder will be sent out to families nearer the time containing the meeting link.  We value and welcome collaboration and feedback from parents and encourage your participation.

秀秀直播 News Term 1 Week 4 : From the Principal

COVID-19 Update聽

The disruption to the 2022 school year has continued with the increased number of COVID-19 cases in the community.  As families are aware, we are working closely with WA Health through AISWA (Association of Independent Schools Australia) in determining procedures for supporting students and staff who test positive to COVID-19.  This has not been an easy time and the challenges presented to our community have been commensurate to an ever-changing landscape.

As per my last communication to families of 24 February (published on the College website), the process for contact tracing and identification of COVID-19 cases has been refined due to the quantum of work required to provide more timely information.  Contact tracing will now be conducted by the College.  To ensure an efficient and effective process, we have created an addition to our College COVID-19 web page so that parents can complete our 鈥Reporting Form鈥 should their child test positive for COVID-19.  I wish to assure families that students who test positive or who are identified as close contacts will be well supported by the College.

I recognise that there has been some frustration in our community but am grateful for your patience and ongoing support.  I am very pleased at the way our students have commenced their learning this year and responded with youthful exuberance and resilience to this crisis.  One of the key pillars of a successful school is a settled environment.  Despite the myriad changes, our students have adapted quickly which bodes well for the term ahead.

As more information is provided by AISWA, we will inform parents and guardians of the impact on our local context.

High Achievers Assembly

On Wednesday 16 February we celebrated our 2021 High Achievers.  Our assembly was planned to be held in the gymnasium with 1130 Years 7-12 students to celebrate our High Achievers of 2021 and our Years 6 and 12 student leaders.  But due to the announcement of new COVID restrictions in WA,.

At the assembly, I spoke of this year marking 150 years of Marist Education in Australia in which the first school class occurred in 1872 at the Rocks, Church Hill, in Sydney.  As part of the 150 years celebrations, all Marist schools were invited to engage with a special initiative, the Marist Alumni Project.  The project has been designed to identify and celebrate significant contributions that Marist educated women and men have made to our Nation over the past 150 years, echoing the dream of Saint Marcellin for Marist education, 鈥榯o form good Christians and good citizens鈥.  The outcome of the project is the creation of an Anthology of Outstanding Australian Marist Alumni.

I spoke of the significant achievements of some of our past alumni and suggested that one or two 2021 High Achievers, of whom we were celebrating, might also go on to become an Outstanding Alumni in the future.

Please click here to view my speech in full.

秀秀直播 Council Meeting

On Thursday 17 February the College Advisory Council commenced its meetings for 2022.  At the first meeting we welcomed new member, Greg Wheeler, to the Finance Committee and Advisory Council and look forward to his contribution, given his diverse financial and past student experiences.
The key theme of the meeting was the commencement of the new company, Marist Schools Australia Limited, the newly established entity which has the single focus on the governance and administration of Marist schools, including 秀秀直播.

秀秀直播 News Term 1 Week 2: From the Director of Mission and Catholic Identity

鈥淚 am the good shepherd; I know my own and my own know me鈥 John 10:14 and He deeply knows, and He truly loves.

As we settle into a new year, albeit with another topsy-turvy start, the Ministry Team would like to remind us all to Breathe, as we all did so beautifully last year but, also in these uncertain times, that the relationships we foster at 秀秀直播 must remain true and steadfast.

Our theme this year 鈥 Known and Loved: dignity for all 鈥 clearly conveys that we can love others because we are first loved by God. 鈥淲e love because he first loved us,鈥 writes John (1 John 4:19). This is the life we are invited into. This relational love is the deepest reality of the Christian life. Knowing and loving is the call of being a Marist educator. It is also the call of every parent and, in our communities, we all seek to know and to show love to young people. Following the creed of St Marcellin Champagnat, we Marists have always shown love for our students. But the nature of these times, when our interactions are often limited by the cold interface of Teams, blocked by necessary face masks or staged two metres apart, reminds us to let young people know that they are fully known and loved because then they can be themselves and feel deeply loved for being just who they are.

Year 12 Retreat

The Year 12 retreat is a significant part of the school journey and integral to our Vision for Mission: to form 鈥淕ood Christians and Good Citizens鈥. The retreat aims to assist students in recognising the importance of holistic development and to give further understanding of living life to the full. Students will be given time to reflect on relationships with family, self, others, and God and will be encouraged to contemplate who they are and who they are called to be.

Communication has been sent to families regarding changes to the Year 12 Retreat for 2022 and can be found .

Youth Ministry & Advocacy

St Marcellin Champagnat鈥檚 desire for every child was that 鈥淲e aim at something better鈥 to give them Christian spirit, attitudes and virtues possessed by good Christians and good citizens.鈥 秀秀直播 seeks to provide opportunities to students and families to live out the Christian mission. Here are some of the ways students can get involved in 2022.

  • Game Changers: Game Changers is a Marist Youth Program facilitated in Marist schools  around Australia, that encourages students to focus on the areas of Leadership, Faith Development, Community and Ministry & Service. The program has three tracks from Year 7-12. Groups gather on Tuesday afternoons, 3:30 鈥 4:30 every second week, with a retreat day each year, as well as camps and excursions in the senior years. If you would like your son or daughter to become involved in Game Changers please contact Aleisha Bryson.
  • Living Marist: Our Christian Service-Learning Program for Years 7, 8 and 9. The program is commences in Term 1 and concludes in Term 3. Students are expected to complete 10 hours of community service during this time. The College will provide opportunities for students, as well as expect students to find their own volunteering experiences.
  • Marist Connect nights: An opportunity for students in Year 11 and 12 to meet with students from St Joseph鈥檚 Northam and Bunbury Catholic College to develop relationships and grow a wider network facilitated by Marist Youth Ministry.

In 2022 we are committed once again to supporting the following organisations:

  • Caritas: Project Compassion and Caritas Fast, students will be involved in fundraising activities during Lent in Term 1 with all proceeds going to Caritas.
