秀秀直播 News Term 1 Week 8: From the Deputy Principal Secondary

This week the Marcellin campus celebrated Harmony Week. We began the week with an online assembly where our Social Justice Captains, Joshua Lee and Isabella Meyer talked about the significance of Harmony Week in Australia. We were reminded that Australia is a vibrant and multicultural country 鈥 from the oldest continuous culture of our first Australians to the cultures of our newest arrivals from around the world. Our cultural diversity is one of our greatest strengths and is at the heart of who we are. It makes Australia a great place to live. Harmony Week is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background, united by a set of core Australian values.

Throughout the PCG this week students were able to participate in activities such as learning simple phrases such as hello, goodbye, please and thankyou in common languages spoken in Australia or discussing the lyrics and themes of cultural diversity through listening to popular songs. PCGs were also able to participate in a Cultural Diversity Challenge where they were encouraged to complete challenges that allowed them to get an understanding of the various cultural heritages within our College Community. On Friday our students participated in a free dress day, where they were encouraged to embrace the Harmony Week theme through their clothing choices. All proceeds for the free dress day will go to our Project Compassion fundraising

National Day of Action Against Violence and Bullying:

Last Friday the College acknowledged the National Day of Action against Violence & Bullying. This is a day for schools, students and the community to say Bullying. No Way!

The theme for 2022 is Kindness Culture and last Friday students were encouraged to get involved to foster a Kindness Culture by promoting inclusion, respect and community belonging here at 秀秀直播. Students were encouraged to wear orange hair accessories, jewellery or socks to help spread the Kindness Culture message.

Everyone has a role to play for bullying prevention and showing kindness can be the first step. Our Wellbeing Captains took over our Instagram page for the day and asked students and staff how they create a Kindness Culture through the following ways:

  • Tell someone you appreciate their friendship
  • Really listen when someone speaks
  • Notice what is important to those around you
  • Spend quality time together
  • Offer to help someone
  • Say something uplifting to someone

These small actions can make a big difference, and it starts with each person promoting a Kindness Culture in person or online.

Year 8 Extended PCG 鈥 Week 8

Year 8 students were looking at the 2022 Marist theme 鈥楰nown and Loved- Dignity for All鈥 in Extended PCG this week.

Part of our reflection was looking at the ways school makes students feel known and loved and some ways we could do this better. 鈥疭tudents reflected on the activities we do that encourage participation, homework club, celebrating people鈥檚 achievements but spoke about how Covid has limited some of the things we do such as inter-school competitions.

From there we focused on human dignity through kindness and created Random Acts of Kindness Calendars for the rest of Lent.鈥 The students had a great range of ideas of how to show acts of kindness within their school, family, and neighborhood.

The students are now being challenged to tick off a random act of kindness every day for the rest of Lent, but we hope this becomes a practice they engage in every day moving forward.

Year 7 School Based Immunisation Program 2022鈥&苍产蝉辫;

The Department of Health will be at the College on Monday 28 March to vaccinate Year 7 students that have provided their consent form. This vaccination is for pertussis (whooping cough, tetanus, diphtheria, and human papillomavirus (HPV).鈥疶he 2nd vaccination will be on Monday 17 October.

Child and Adolescent Health Service 鈥 Community Health have confirmed no鈥痝ap is required between receiving a COVID vaccine and this vaccine.鈥痀our child does need to be symptom free and well. Families are reminded that you can take your child to your GP should you prefer. All Year 7 students are permitted to wear their sports uniform on this day.

Principal鈥檚 Assembly/Easter Liturgy:

On Wednesday of Week 10, we will hold our Principal鈥檚 Assembly. We look forward to celebrating the achievements of our students as we conclude the school term. Our Easter Liturgy will be celebrated during this time. The assembly link will be provided to parents in Week 10.

Year 11 Boys 鈥 Future Footy Program

Congratulations to the following Year 11 students who have made it through to the Futures program for their local clubs.

  • Mitchell Bell
  • Charlie Robinson
  • Jaxon Chester
  • Tom Cossom
  • Reuban Keane
  • James Knapton

These young men have been working exceptionally hard over the pre-season for selection into this development program, with their skill and fitness development being significant. There is a lot of excitement around their season and the hope that this is the beginning of really great things for their future football ambitions. We wish this group of Year 11 boys all the best in their upcoming fixtures and we look forward to sharing in their team, and personal successes.

Year 12 Integrated Excursion

On Thursday the 10th of March the Year 12 Integrated Science class attended an excursion to Rottnest Island where they took part in Ecology studies focusing on the many salt lakes and sand dune systems on the island.

The salt lakes cover about 10% of the entire island and represent a harsh environment for many organisms. The Year 12 Integrated Science class spend time measuring various conditions of the salt lakes including pH, and salinity, while also closely observing the organisms which inhabit the salt lake ecosystem. One of the most beautiful features of these lakes is the presence of pink algae which gives lakes their distinctive pink colour.

The Year 12 Integrated Science class also studied the many sand dune systems on the island, completing a dune transect to map how the vegetation and abiotic features of the dune system changed as we moved away from the beach.

Rhyley鈥檚 Ride for Canteen

Our Year 11 Romero student, Rhyley Wake, completed a 370km from Perth to Busselton un support for Canteen. Rhyley raised $549 for the Life Cycle for Canteen which supports young people with cancer. This is an outstanding achievement, and we are so proud of Rhyley鈥檚 commitment to, and support of those within our community that require much needed support.

Last week we presented students with Merit awards at an online Lavalla assembly. It was lovely to see the varying reasons for which students received awards and celebrate their fantastic start to the school year.

We also presented our age winners for our Lavalla Swimming Carnival. A massive congratulations to these students on their excellent performance and achievement.

Harmony Week

Thank you to students who dressed today in either the national dress of their heritage or wore orange to represent Harmony Day. We are so fortunate to have so many cultures represented across our community and enjoy celebrating the diversity of all our families.

Harmony Week is a perfect opportunity to pause and celebrate the amazing contribution that this diversity brings to our lives. Further, your gold coin donations will make a positive contribution to our Project Compassion fundraising initative.

Raffle draws will be conducted at both the鈥疞avalla and Marian campuses on Friday 8 April 2022.

If there are any parents who are able to assist in assembling and wrapping the prize baskets, please contact Jane Short, Religious Education Coordinator via email at jane.short@newman.wa.edu.au

Solar Car Challenge

The College鈥檚 Year 3 鈥 10 SHINE Teacher, Mrs Lara Ognenis this week held a Solar Car challenge with our Year 6 and 8 students. Students participated in groups of 4 to build a solar car and test the success of their creations, teaching them valuable problem solving, collaboration and STEM based skills.

Mini-Marists program

We had a fantastic response to our launch of the Mini-Marists program, with 66 Year 6 students attending during their lunch break to find out about how they can be involved in social justice initatives across the College.

Thank you to Mrs Jane Short for her organisation of the program, and Lavalla teachers for supporting the staff.

NAPLAN Testing

This week our Year 3 and 5 students undertook the NAPLAN Nationally Coordinated POactice Test, which allows schools to be confident in their connectivity for the actual NAPLAN assessment.

Students should be congratulated on the mature approach and organisation that they displayed throughout this practice test.
NAPLAN assessments will commence Tuesday 10 May and conclude Friday 20 May.  If families have any questions they should direct them to their child鈥檚 classroom teacher in the first instance, or our Leader of Learning Katya Anderson at katya.anderson@newman.wa.edu.au. A full schedule has been distrubuted to families recently.

School Photo Days

Families should take note that our school photos are being held on the following days:

  • Years 3-6 (Lavalla Campus) – Friday 29 April 2022
  • Kindy 鈥 Year 2 (Marian Campus) – Friday 13 May 2022

More information will be made available to families around uniform requirements and the photo ordering process as we get closer to the date. It is important that all students attend on the day, as school photos become treasured memories over the years, and we would love for all students to be represented in their class.

Trinity College Lismore Appeal

Thank you to everyone who generously donated to our Appeal to support Trinity College after the recent devasting floods in Queensland. Although it will be a long road to recovery for the community in Lismore, the College has already adapted to provide online learning and is also using classroom facilities at Southern Cross University to ensure their students鈥 education can continue.

As fellow Marists we trust our prayers and financial contributions will help support the students and staff at Trinity College as they recover and rebuild their community. As a community we have been able to make a contribution to the rebuilding of the community of $5000. Thank you to everyone who dontated, if you still wish to donate, you can using the details below.

Caritas Fast

Each year during Lent, we commit to supporting Caritas鈥 Project Compassion which gives our school community the opportunity to raise awareness and funds to support under privileged societies. This is underpinned by our Vision for Mission, calling us to serve humanity and raise up those in poverty.

As part of Project Compassion for 2022 over 50 of our students participated in the Caritas Fast. By only eating a barley sugar at recess and a cup of cold rice at lunch these students began to appreciate how little some people in the world have available to eat. The students also raised valuable funds towards our target of reaching $15,000 to support Project Compassion.

Year 5 Feed the Poor

On Wednesday the 23 March 2022 Year 5 students had to participate in a challenge which was called feed the poor. Everyone had to bring a donation of $2 or more and we donated to project compassion. The total amount of money we raised was $171.90, some students forgot to bring their donation so that鈥檚 not the final amount of money we raised. We sat under the tree and enjoyed the rice that was cooked. It was interesting to only have a plain portion of rice for lunch. It helped us to understand and sympathise with what it felt like not to have the luxury of food choices and flavours.

Why Did We Do It?

We did it because it taught us to be grateful for what we have instead of being greedy about what we don鈥檛 have. We got to learn how lucky we are and what it feels like for people across the world that don鈥檛 have choices for their food and what they have to eat. We will also be using this as a topic in writing and this experience will help us. Also we did this to raise money for Caritas. Overall, the experience was amazing, and we have learnt so much, we hope that other years to come get to share the experience and learn what we learnt.

BY MAELEE, ELLA T AND MAVRICK.

Game Changers Retreat

On March 29, our Year 11 Game Changers will take part in their annual Retreat Day. These days are facilitated by Marist Youth Ministry and offer an opportunity for Game Changers to connect and build community with each other. The program features 3 main sessions, with an opportunity for large and small group discussion. The aim is to energise students in their ongoing journey as well as allow space and time to gather and plan for their leadership and service opportunities within and beyond the school context.

We look forward to sharing this exciting and rewarding experience with our Year 11 Game Changers.

Sacramental Retreat Facilitation Training

In 2022, 秀秀直播 is partnering up with 24/7 Youth Mininstry, to train a group of Year 10 students in the art of youth ministry. This intensive program will see students engage in 3 workshops with Mario Borg, the Director of 24/7 Youth Ministry. At the conclusion of this program, students will support 24/7 Youth Mininstry with Sacramental Retreats with students in Year 3 and 4.

This is a great opportunity for students to grow in their own understanding of their faith and seek to foster the faith of others through their retreat facilitation.

Thank you to Mario Borg and the students for their commitment to this program.

Staff Lenten Prayer Meetings

秀秀直播 is actively committed to broadening the opportunities for the faith formation of staff members, which naturally flows through to the formation of our students. Supported by our Vision for Mission: to form 鈥済ood Christians and good citizens鈥, staff have access to a variety of formation experiences from prayers to liturgical celebrations.

Each week during Lent, the Marist Association of St Marcellin Champagnat has offered staff the opportunity to meet online, reflecting on scripture, praying and sharing, using a resource from the Diocese of Wollongong. This has been a fantastic opportunity for staff to pause and be still and to put into practise this message we give to our students daily. As a College we are committed to the ongoing formation of our staff and students as we continue to live out the dream of St Marcellin Champagnat, 鈥渢o make Jesus Christ known and loved.鈥

Sacrament of Reconciliation

On Tuesday our Year 11 students had the opportunity to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. This Sacrament encourages students to reflect on their lives, their relationships with God, self, others and creation and to seek forgiveness and healing. Students were invited to judge less and build more authentic relationships. Thanks to Fr Mark from the Redemptorist Monastery for guiding our students and leading the celebration of the sacrament.

Thursday Morning Mass

Thursday Morning Mass continues for students across the College. Mass begins at 8.10 am in the Champagnat Chapel and is celebrated by our local priests.

  • Week 9, Thursday 31 March; Year 4 Students
  • Week 10, Thursday 7 April; Year 7 Students

秀秀直播 News Term 1 Week 8 : From the Vice Principal

By building a Kindness Culture together, we can promote inclusion, respect and community belonging for all students in schools across Australia.  This week we celebrated Harmony week, the theme is Everyone Belongs.  Funds raised will be donated to Project Compassion.

This theme of Everyone Belongs has a striking alignment with our Marist theme for 2022. 鈥楰nown and Love, Dignity for All鈥

秀秀直播 News Term 1 Week 6: From the Deputy Principal Primary

We live in an increasingly digital society, and children are being exposed to social media at increasingly younger ages. This week we had some Lavalla students undertaking a TikTok challenge that had been shared amongst their peers via Snapchat outside of school hours. The age requirement for both of these apps is 13 years and above, yet we are continuing to see children exposed to content via these apps that is not age-appropriate and that they are not mature enough to understand and process.

I regularly utilise the website for impartial reviews on the appropriateness of digital and screen medias for children. It is a fantastic site that provides detailed and relevant information to enable informed decision making. Commonsense Media recommend that is only appropriate for children 15 years and over, and for children 16 years and over. Whilst as a parent myself I understand the pressures of a persistent child who wants to access these applications, it is our role to understand that by allowing access to these applications, children are exposed to a large range of inappropriate media.

This year, the College will move towards a model of iPad management where we have greater control over the applications that can be downloaded onto devices. The roll-out of this management will commence in Term 2 and further information will be provided to parents as we begin this process. In the meantime, I strongly encourage parents to discuss responsible use of digital medias and discuss your rules and boundaries with your child regularly. This will be supported by our in-school programs on cybersafety and responsible use of digital technology.

Marian Assembly

Thank you to 2 Red students and Mrs McAuliffe for the wonderful assembly item that they prepared for our first Marian Assembly of 2022. A big congratulations to all our Merit Award winners also, who have all achieved wonderful things in a variety of different areas.

Due to COVID restrictions, we are unable to gather as a whole campus for our assembly but we encourage you to watch it .

Swimming Carnival

Students in Years 3 to 6 competed in the 秀秀直播 Swimming Carnival today. Despite a required change to our usual format, due to COVID restrictions, we were pleased to still be able to run a fun-filled event that allowed children to participate across a range of different races.

A big thank you to Mrs Tash Richards, Lavalla Physical Education Teacher for her work in preparing students and organising the Carnival.

The students had a fabulous day and we saw some future-Olympians slicing through the water!

Easter Raffle Fundraiser 鈥 Project Compassion

In our efforts to raise funds for Caritas鈥 Project Compassion appeal this Lent, the Primary school will once again be conducting our annual鈥疎aster鈥疪affle Fundraiser. This fundraiser relies on the generous donation of鈥疎aster鈥痚ggs, by our 秀秀直播 families. The donated eggs are then assembled into hampers as prizes for the raffle.

In our efforts as a Catholic school community to address social injustices, we ask families to consider purchasing 鈥渟lavery free鈥 brand of chocolate.

鈥&苍产蝉辫;

We would also greatly appreciate the donation of any baskets or appropriate containers that can be used in assembling the prizes.鈥疍onations of eggs and baskets can be handed in at the Marian or Lavalla Administration office.

Separate raffle draws will be conducted at both the鈥疞avalla and Marian campuses on Friday 8 April 2022.
Tickets will be distributed to students on Monday 21鈥疢arch and additional tickets will be available from the office on both campuses.鈥Tickets will be 50c each or 6 for $2.50.

If there are any parents who are able to assist in assembling and wrapping the prize baskets, please let me know.
