ACC Swimming Carnival

On Wednesday 27 March, the Years 7-12 squad competed in the 2019 A Division Associated & Catholic Colleges (ACC) Swimming Carnival held at HBF Stadium, Claremont. This was the first time in many years that 秀秀直播 was in A Division and the team really stepped up and pushed hard all day finishing 5th overall (only 20 points off 3rd place). This is an outstanding achievement and proves the College is now back in a position to mix it with the big schools. It was a total team effort with most swimmers swimming 鈥榩ersonal bests鈥. It was wonderful to once again collaborate and work with Head Coach Ralph McManis and the 秀秀直播 Swim Club who guided the team through a very rigorous training program providing them the best opportunities for development and success.

The ACC of WA conduct a series of sporting carnivals with the broad aim to provide a culmination to school physical education programs and programs for students with disabilities in Years 7-12. The carnivals provide students the opportunity to further develop their skills whilst representing their school in a variety of sports.

Year 11 and 12 Guest Speakers

Over the course of Weeks 6 and 7, Year 11 and 12 students had the opportunity to hear presentations from guest speakers Dr Jane Genovese and Mr Rob Pike on the following topics:

Dr Jane Genovese, Learning Fundamentals

Dr Jane Genovese from Learning Fundamentals presented evidence-based study hacks and tips to our Year 11 and 12 cohorts. In this session, students were taught active study techniques and strategies to help them take visual notes, become more organised and develop better focus strategies. Students also learnt how to identity their own procrastination patterns, find out what might be behind them, and how to motivate themselves at any time to get their work done.

Mr Rob Pike, Safe Driving

鈥淵our choices define your future, in a positive or negative way, it鈥檚 your choice!鈥 Rob Pike, a high-level athlete with plans of a sporting career, was in the back seat of his friend鈥檚 car when the driver lost control of the vehicle. Rob, the only survivor of the crash, shared with our students what it is like growing up with great ambitions and how a tragic accident changed his whole life and the future he had pictured for himself. Rob鈥檚 remarkable survivor story and details of the accident鈥檚 causation factors, left everyone inspired and thinking about the type of driver they want to be.

Bullying No Way!

On Friday 15 March, the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA) was recognised on our Marcellin Campus (Years 7-12). Students were invited to wear an orange accessory to show their support while some of the student leaders handed out information cards and stickers on the day.

秀秀直播 Newbies: From the Head of Primary

Mitchell Bristow, Head of Primary

Teachers work tirelessly to develop social and emotional skills in each student, to help them understand the core concepts of Literacy and Numeracy, to engage them through the Vision for Learning, Shine through Discovery and grow them in their faith. This occurs every day and is a remarkable feat. One challenge that we must work in partnership with parents, is building student independence. This is a critical skill that will support them in all of their future pursuits. It is a fine balance between letting them take on challenges by themselves, supporting them without 鈥渄oing鈥 it for them and helping them bounce back when they make mistakes. As a PK-12 College, we continually challenge our students to become independent learners, independent individuals and confident young men and women.

Fitness Friday and Coffee at the College

This term the College launched a new initiative at the Marian Campus (Pre Kindy – Year 2), Fitness Friday. Every Friday students can enjoy a selection of activities including Lego Club, Cosmic Yoga, Running Club and Dance Aerobics. Fitness Friday coincides with another new community engagement initiative, Coffee at the College. The College is continually looking for ways to create opportunities for parents to interact, contribute and belong to the extended 秀秀直播 community.

Years 3-6 Eco Ninjas

Last year a group of dedicated students formed a sustainability committee called the Eco Ninjas on the Lavalla Campus (Years 3-6 Campus). The team have been working to improve the campus by reducing waste, growing vegetables and to inform students about sustainability and the environment. The Ninjas have recently received a Woolworths Junior Landcare Grant of $1000 and look forward to using these funds to continue to improve our school.

Homework Club

Homework Club takes place every Monday from 3.15pm 鈥 4.30pm for students in Years 3-6. Students have the opportunity to complete work, work with teachers and complete their homework.

CoderDojo Club

IPSHA Swimming Carnival

On Thursday 21 March, 秀秀直播 hosted the Independent Primary School Heads of Australia (IPSHA) Swimming Carnival. Students in Years 4-6 competed against other Catholic Primary Schools and represented the College with pride while demonstrating excellent teamwork and sportsmanship.

IPSHA conduct a series of sporting carnivals for students in Years 3-6 with the focus on participation. There are no shields or points awarded. It is about giving students the opportunity to compete against students from other primary schools, promoting fun and enjoyment, encouraging everyone to participate and highlighting the importance of fair play and healthy competition.

Year 12 Ball

The night started for the girls at 11.55am as we rushed around to hair and makeup appointments and making final adjustments for their big night. For most of the guys the afternoon consisted of the beach, cold rock ice cream and a sleep. A beautiful sunset and skyline met us as we arrived to take our iconic ball photos. Everyone looked stunning even if the wind did make photos a bit tricky at times. We congregated outside the doors of Fraser’s Restaurant, a beautiful venue which foreshadowed the night to come. Mocktails and photos followed and then we were ushered by teachers into the venue. Tables set, dance floor clear and a DJ ready to go. A few formalities, a prayer and the ball had officially begun.

As the night progressed after a three course dinner even some teachers ventured onto the dance floor with an honourable mention to Mr Finneran with moves that were definitely questionable. With some miss worded renditions of songs and a few crowd surfs, the night was coming to a close, but not without a few photos with our favourite teachers and best mates. The night was one never to be forgotten as together as a year group we united making lifelong memories. Thank you to Ms Bramanto for organising such a wonderful event.

Synergy Solar Car Challenge

On Thursday 28 March, 秀秀直播 hosted the North Perth Metropolitan Regional Synergy Solar Car Challenge in the Marist Auditorium and oval. Around 50 schools competed in two competitions, one for Year 6 students and one for Year 8 students. The teams were challenged to assemble a solar car using a small solar panel and car parts and race them over a 20 meter circuit to see who was the fastest. The 秀秀直播 teams performed with distinction and displayed great citizenship as the hosting school towards all the others teams. Our two Year 6 teams finished 2nd and 5th, and our Year 8 teams finished 4th and 5th. Our second placed Year 6 team will now represent 秀秀直播 in the State Final at Optus Stadium on Tuesday 9 April.

Many schools and representatives from Synergy & STAWA made mention of our amazing facilities and grounds and how welcome they were made by all staff and students. An event like this would not succeed without the tireless efforts of staff in pivotal roles at 秀秀直播. My sincere thanks to all those involved on the day.

Year 11 Outdoor Education Camp

On Sunday 24 March, the Year 11 Outdoor Education class had an early morning start to their Semester 1 expedition. On Day 1 we visited the Calgardup Cave and solution pipe where we vertical descend into an extensive, dark cave filled with stalagmites and stalactites. We then visited Giants Cave where we all laid down, 80 meters underground, in pitch black, and had 10 minutes of silence to reflect on our day. Day 2 was a very early start driving to our second abseil of the camp, Brides Cave which was a 35 meter tall cliff with a 20 meter free fall. This cave tested our skills as we had to use correct technique in order to descend safely. At 11.30am we headed back to our campsite to pack up our things and go on a 10km hike. This hike was mostly flat with a few hills and the reward at the end was arriving at our brand new campsite, Jarrahdene Campground. Here we were challenged with our ropes assessment and cooked an early dinner as once again we had an early start the next day. On Day 3 we enjoyed our final abseil of the camp at Willyabrup. The amazing view stunned us all as we abseiled down a 50 meter cliff face. We definitely saved the best abseil for last as it made us all grateful for the challenges we were able to experience.
