ֱ News Term 2 Week 6: From the Principal

“We don’t need to improve schools – we need to re-invent them for our times, our requirements and our future.” [NMC Horizon Report 2013 K-12 edition]

This week I attended the Learning Environments Australia Conference here in Perth. The theme was transformation and how spaces in schools, universities and technical colleges need to reflect this intent. Put simply, continual transformation within learning environments is shifting our understanding of the way people learn, what they learn, and where they learn. In a world of rapid change and disruption, the role of education and the facilities that provide it is evolving.

Our forthcoming Stage 1 capital development project will reflect this transformation of education where collaboration will be central to our learning intent. Our Vision for Learning – Shine Through Discovery, Let Your Light Shine (Matthew 5:16) has collaboration as a key pillar to how we learn in our College. Central to this is how we elicit student voice in their learning and ultimately the pathways they take. Collaboration and a mindset re-evaluating of what is crucial in education will also ensure our parents feel they have a place and all students feel that they are valued.

Thank you to those parents, guardians and members of the wider community who attended our community forum on our forthcoming Stage 1 build. The conversation with our Architect, Mr Bob Sly, MSM Architects, was informative and collaborative about the future of our school and the spaces that will reflect our learning intent. The Learning Environments Conference affirmed the strategic direction in our learning and the spaces that we are providing for our students into the future. Please for up to date information.

Champagnat Day 6 June

Marist communities across the world recognise and celebrate the Feast Day of our Founder, St Marcellin Champagnat, on 6 June. Our community is here today because of the inspiration and animation of St Marcellin Champagnat. For our community, that legacy lives on through our students, teachers, and families. Our inspiration today is underpinned by our Marist Brothers and their lives exemplified by service, hard work, presence and humility. We give thanks for our Marist Brothers within the Churchlands community. Our privilege is that we have Brothers still present in our school and their story lives on.

As a College we will celebrate the Feast of our Founder St Marcellin Champagnat as a whole community next Friday 14 June with Mass followed by fete activities.

Leave

I will be on leave from the College for the last three weeks of term. Ms Lisa Fogliani will be Acting Principal for that duration. I would like to wish all families every blessing in the weeks ahead.

ֱ News Term 2 Week 6: From the Vice Principal

Seminal skills in literacy, numeracy and general capabilities in information, communication technology and critical thinking support learning at school so students can navigate opportunities beyond Year 12. Our Vision for Learning, Shine through Discovery, exposes students to the essential skills of collaboration, creativity and critical thinking which are increasingly important in an age of disruption and change. Discovering how we work with others, co-learning and co-constructing ideas is important in working with others and developing good working relationships.

Code of Conduct / Child Protection

A reminder to all families that the Code of Conduct can be accessed via the College website The Code is mandated by Catholic Education Western Australia and the application of the Code extends to all staff, students, parents, guardians, caregivers and volunteers.
The Code seeks to value the dignity of every person, foster positive relationships, ensuring confidentiality and accountability and supports professional boundaries. Events held during school hours AND outside of school hours that are associated with the College are also supported by the Code of Conduct. Any perceived breaches of the Code can be discussed with any member of the Senior Leadership Team. We thank you in advance for your understanding and support of how we strive to partner positively with one another.

Child Protection and Safety

In addition to writing to the College community regarding our Code of Conduct, we feel it is also appropriate to communicate the processes, policies and frameworks the College applies to ensure our school is a safe place for all children and that our staff are informed, assessed and aware of their responsibilities to this commitment.

Working with Children Checks

The Working with Children Check (WWC Check) is a compulsory screening strategy in Western Australia and the Christmas and Cocos (Keeling) Islands.

The WWC Check aims to protect children by:

  • deterring people from applying to work with children where they have a relevant charge or conviction on their criminal record that indicates they may harm a child;
  • detecting new charges and convictions of those people who hold a current WWC Card and preventing them from continuing to engage in child-related work where their criminal record and behaviour indicates they may harm a child;
  • protecting children by creating awareness that child safety is a whole of community responsibility.

ֱ has strict processes in place to ensure all staff (teaching, non-teaching, casual relief staff) contractors, clergy and visitors to the College, who are working with children are compliant and validated through the Working With Children database.

More information can be found

Any questions relating to our Child Protection strategies, please contact me at the College.

ֱ News Term 2 Week 6: From the Deputy Principal Wellbeing Secondary

Term 2 has been a busy time for secondary students with a variety of activities occurring throughout the term and ending with Semester One Reports. In recent weeks our senior students have undertaken exams while our Year 10 students embarked on their subject selection journey and began to identify pathways they would like to follow over the coming years. As we move towards the end of Term 2, I would encourage our students to continue to apply themselves and embrace the opportunities afforded to them.

Year 7 Humanities Incursion

“On Tuesday the 28th of May we met Ryka Ali, he lives in Cairns (Queensland), and travels around Australia teaching about Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander culture.

He showed us so many things such as hunting techniques, traditional clothing, traditional instruments, how to play the didgeridoo and we had the opportunity to learn traditional dances. We got told about how they live now and what it looks like, we also got told how they get the materials to make hunting tools.

He taught us words and phrases in his language and how songs and dances tell stories. He explained why you only see men playing the didgeridoo as it is bad luck for women to play. We got shown how they make paint and what the symbols mean on their bodies, and that they only ever wear it for traditional reasons or for very special events.

The best part was watching Ryka make the teachers dance like kangaroos.”

RebeccaBramanto
LEADER OF WELLBEING YEAR 12

From the Counselling and Wellbeing Team

Exam time can bring with it stress for many students. While this is normal and expected, it is important for students to develop positive coping strategies in order to maintain their wellbeing during these times and perform to the best of their ability. ReachOut is an Australian online mental health organisation for young people and their parents, providing practical support, tools and tips to help young people get through anything from everyday issues to tough times. ReachOut suggests the following tips for productive study;

5 Steps to Study Success

Not All Stress Is Bad
While it’s often given a bad rap, the right amount of stress canactually motivateyou to get stuff done. The key thing is to recognise when stress has tipped over from being a motivating force to an overwhelming emotion.

20-Minute Study Rule
No one can study for six hours straight and be effective. Break up your time into twenty-minute chunks for the most effective use of your brain.

Say It Out Loud
The best way to really remember and learn is to talk about what you’re learning out loud, without using any notes.

Breaks = Good, Constant Distraction = Bad
Taking planned and timed breaks will help you remain on task, but checking your social media every 5 minutes is a sure-fire study fail. Research shows that it can take up to twenty minutes to refocus on your task once you’ve been distracted.

Sleep Is Your Friend
If you get a good night’s sleep before your exam, you are scientifically proven to retain more of what you studied the day before than if you stay up crazy late.

The counselling team is available throughout the Semester 1 exam period to support individual students with study and stress related concerns. Support can be accessed through the relevant Leader of Wellbeing.

ֱ News Term 2 Week 6: From the Head of Primary

At ֱ we foster creativity by promoting a growth mindset allowing students to achieve to their full potential. Staff have been trained in developing a growth mindset and research proves this way of thinking significantly benefits student learning. A growth mindset, a differentiated curriculum and our Vision for Learning allows each student to achieve success at their level, develop in confidence and be challenged while at school. In Year 1 this looks like students creating tallies, graphs and making predictions about favourite ice-cream flavours and in Year 6 it looks like students designing a device to detect natural disasters.

Fitness Club – Lavalla

Last Wednesday, Lavalla students enjoyed the inaugural Fitness Club run by Mrs Pugh.The students skipped, ran and took part in a fitness circuit.This will run every Wednesday starting at 7.45 am.All are welcome.

Marcellin Award

Congratulations to William Raats in Year 1 who has been recognised with a Marcellin Award for his hard work and commitment in keeping the school grounds clean by picking-up rubbish at lunchtime.

Isabel Burton from 3 Blue is this week’s worthy recipient of the Marcellin Award on the Lavalla Campus. Isabel has been acknowledged by numerous members of staff as someone who works hard, gives 100% effort in all situations and sets a great example.

Isabel actively volunteers to help others both in and out of the classroom. She is willing to support her classmates while still ensuring her own work is completed. Isabel quietly goes about getting a job done without thought of acknowledgement or reward. She uses her initiative and always offers help if someone is injured or unwell.

Isabel is always happy to include anyone in games and activities. She are valued by others as a group member because she shows excellent leadership skills while also remaining humble and allowing others to take the lead as well. Isabel also celebrates her peers’ gifts and talents.

On Thursday 6 June, Year 6 were involved in a STEM activity called TINKERING. Tinkering gives students the opportunity to be creative, think critically and collaborate in an inquiry-based approach to STEM-rich learning.The day allowed our Vision for Learning “Shine through Discovery” to be present as the students took apart various electronic devices, labelled the parts, and noted the purposes and complexities. Students then used the parts to create a natural disaster detector.We were very fortunate to have Year 6 parents and grandparents assisting the students.
