秀秀直播 News Term 2 Week 2: From the Principal

Welcome back to Term 2!

As indicated in my most recent letter to families, Update #12, on Monday 11 May we resume face to face teaching PK-12. We look forward to transitioning students back to school, conscious that there will still be some families who choose to keep their children at home.

The last few weeks have been an incredible journey that has revealed the very best of our College. The collaboration, perseverance and commitment of our community in responding to this crisis has been inspirational and demonstrates a high level of trust and confidence in the time ahead.

Shine through Discovery – Let your light shine, Matthew 5:16

The foundation of our Vision for Learning 鈥 Shine through discovery, let your light shine, has been in the implementation are our pedagogical pillars 鈥 Challenge, Collaborate, Create and Celebrate. This vision has aligned our leadership and our systematic delivery of curriculum and provided a cultural framework that has enabled this school to deliver a student experience that is purposeful and meaningful. Moreover, it has given our staff an agility and flexibility to develop their own capacity as teachers in how they themselves became learners and ultimately co-learners with our students.

The advent of this crisis brought to the fore the incredible commitment, innovation and creativity of our teachers to adapt to new ways of learning. Our Remote Learning Plan has become an instrumental professional learning tool for our teachers in their own development in engaging in these new ways of learning. The response in engagement of our students and their experience of learning reflects this. I have been astounded by our students鈥 engagement and creativity and capacity to respond to this crisis.

We have been challenged to work more closely than ever in partnership with our families, and our Marist charism has underpinned this success. We have consistently communicated with families; from the Executive to the PCG and classroom teachers. We have relied on families to place trust in our Remote Learning Plans, and are so proud of the way our community has been able to respond and work in collaboration in the education of students from PK-Y12.

The College has found new and innovative ways to continue our wellbeing program. We have increased our use of technology to facilitate engagement with students and families. This has included live YouTube streaming of assemblies, liturgies and prayer. We have developed YouTube series for students to engage in. We have leveraged the power of technology to enhance our learning programs. These are changes that will be adopted to enhance our engagement moving forward.

Key Learnings

At this point, it is important for us as a community to consider the key learnings that have emerged as a consequence of COVID-19 and the impact it has had on the life of our school; more specifically, teaching and learning.

The Leadership Team will be engaging with teachers, students and families in the weeks ahead to seek feedback on how these learnings can be integrated into the life of our school into the future. These learnings will also provide stimulus for our Strategic Directions Plan 2020-2022 which is currently being developed.

Thank you again to all families for your incredible support of our school. The heart of this community is in the relationships that are cultivated, consistent with our Marist charism underpinned by our family spirit.

秀秀直播 Parents Consultative Committee (NPCC)

This morning, Vice Principal Lisa Fogliani, and I met with the Executive of the NPCC 鈥 Caterina Celisano, Laura McFadgen and Kathy Blitz-Cokis. At that meeting, the decision was made to conduct an NPCC meeting during mid Term 2 to provide information regarding the learnings we have garnered around the COVID-19 crisis, as well as our Annual School Improvement Plan.
In the meantime, I warmly welcome families to tune into our 秀秀直播 Parents guest speaker, Justin Coulson – Australia鈥檚 most respected and popular Positive Psychology & relationships speaker, facilitator, author, and researcher. The topic is 鈥Inside the Mind; Raising an emotionally intelligent Child.鈥 The Presentation will be live streamed on Wednesday 20 May at 7.00pm via Zoom. This will be a 90 minutes presentation followed by Q&A. More details to follow.

Mothers Day

I hope that many will have the opportunity to spend time with their mothers this Sunday. For some families, like myself, we are unable to be physically present to our mums, but we can be there in spirit and hopefully through word. I remind myself every day about the amazing impact my own mum has had on my life 鈥 the unconditional love, care and support which has sustained me to this day.

We are so blessed to be part of a Marian family which emphasises where our founder, St Marcellin Champagnat, asks of us to draw nearer to Mary and her example. Her strength, resilience and love inspires us today to do the same.

Wishing all families a happy Mothers Day.

秀秀直播 News Term 2 Week 2: From the Leader of Mission and Catholic Identity

“Prayer is the breath of faith. It is like a cry that comes forth from the heart of the believer and is entrusted to God.” Pope Francis

As with all things during this time, our Ministry content has moved online. We have had several great initiatives that have sought to make Jesus Christ known and loved by our staff, students and families. All resources that have been created can be accessed via our College Website. Initiatives include:

Transforming Mission Web Series
This series invites reflections on relevant themes linked to the Marist Story and sets students challenges to help them through the week.

Student-Led Prayer
This occurs every Friday morning at 8.20am in the Chapel. Our Faith and Liturgy Captains, Georgia Whitely and Tegan Connelly, lead us through their own reflection and invite students to join them. Please encourage your child to attend either online or in the Chapel.

Anzac Day Liturgy
Last week we commemorated Anzac Day as a PK-12 community.聽聽This saw the coming together of our students to remember the brave men and women who served and continue to serve our Nation. We are grateful to聽Jim Truscott who shared his reflection with the students about the day.

Mothers Day Liturgy
Our Mothers Day Liturgy was another opportunity for our PK-12 community to gather and give thanks to our mums who do so much for us.聽聽The selflessness of mothers sits hand in hand with Christ鈥檚 example to serve others.聽聽We pray in gratitude this coming Sunday for all our mums.

Gamechangers / Remar

Our Youth Ministry program Remar and Gamechangers has launched again with Y11 and Y12 Remar students meeting online for the first time on Tuesday and our Y10鈥檚 beginning in Week 3. A great way for the students to restart their connections with each other and contemplate the other.

St Vincent De Paul – Emergency Assistance Program

St Vincent de Paul is running an emergency assistance program with drive and drop off hubs across Perth.

秀秀直播 is proud to assist Vinnies with this worthwhile act of almsgiving as we all know that those in need were some of the hardest hit during this time of crisis. We also understand that there are families in our own community that have been doing it tough and so we only encourage you to donate if you can.

秀秀直播 News Term 2 Week 2: From the Deputy Principal Wellbeing Secondary

The staff and I have been very happy in welcoming back our students for Term 2. While Week 1 predominantly saw our Year 11 and 12 students on campus, Week 2 has seen a dramatic increase in the number of Years 7-10 students back on campus.

The start of Term has seen our Senior students completing revision exercises with teachers and beginning to move forward in their curriculum. While the past months have been trying for all, it is pleasing to see students reconnecting on campus and moving forward with their studies.

Our Years 7-10 students have started the Term with their remote learning programs and, on behalf of the students, I would like to thank the staff for the immense amount of work they have put in for this to be a success. While we have seen an increase in student numbers on campus this week, the remote learning program continues to operate effectively so that no student, whether on campus or operating remotely, is disadvantaged.

While large gatherings are prohibited from occurring, students will continue to engage in year groups and Guilds via remote platforms. This week, students took part in year remote group assemblies and it was pleasing to see that we were able to recognise and celebrate some outstanding student work. Our Wellbeing calendar will continue to operate, albeit in a different style. In the coming weeks students will remotely take part in Guild activities and wellbeing talks during their extended PCG.

As we continue to move forward as a community, I would like to thank all students, parents and guardians for their ongoing support and understanding. Please continue to direct any queries you have to the College.

Remote Learning 鈥 Student Reflections

“As I am in Year 7 and have only just started high school, remote learning has been challenging. Some experiences that were improved during the remote learning period were time management, learning independently, contacting friends online, spending more time with family and overall improving our technology skills. It gave me more time to complete my work and improve my organisation skills. Although we are used to face to face learning, remote learning was a good learning experience.” Daniel Miniello, Year 7

“At the end of Term 1 and the beginning of Term 2 we were required to move to remote learning. At the start it was a little difficult to get in a rhythm but after a couple of days I worked out what was to work well for me. I found that sticking to the structure of a normal school day by following my timetable was easier to maintain focus and cover all my subjects. I was able to use my sport periods, recess and lunch breaks to have downtime, get some fresh air, shoot some netball or do our sport drills before getting back into my timetable. It was important to make sure that I had enough breaks to keep focused and also keep time for normal homework, whilst making sure to finish at a reasonable time each day. I was needing to keep a balance between my school and homework and my mental health.

Afternoons also gave me time to reconnect with friends from both inside and out of school. This was via phone calls and facetime chats. It was good to experience the challenges of remote learning and developing a process to get everything done that worked for me. I can’t wait to get back to school and see my teachers and friends in person again.” Tayla Jack, Year 10

“During my remote learning experience I have really enjoyed using video conference calls with my teachers as well as working out a plan and structure for my day. However, I have found the experience challenging at times as I miss interacting with students and teachers. I have also found it difficult to keep my fitness level up but with the help of a few apps and YouTube links I have been able to create a couple of personal fitness programs for myself. Overall I have really enjoyed this experience and I feel that it has prepared me well for the future.” Josh Downes, Year 10

“My online learning experience came as a shock and took some getting used to. I had to work through various challenges such as difficulty to get in touch with teachers independently. I also found it hard staying motivated whilst in a home environment, but once I found an effective routine and took frequent breaks, I was able to complete all the necessary work. After a couple of lessons, my teachers and I developed a dynamic structure, and we were able to effectively work through all the content together. This looked different for every lesson but generally, we would complete the task and in the last 15 minutes of the lesson we would group call. I found Microsoft teams was the most effective way to video call teachers as a class. My teachers were a massive help in making sure we had work to complete every lesson and we stayed on track which in year 12, was particularly important for our studies and future. We had to ensure that we were up to date so when we returned to school, we were able to continue through our work in time for exams. Of course, due to these unusual circumstances, online learning was not ideal, however, I personally felt we made the most of the experience and am thankful we are back on track at school.” Natalie Scally, Year 12

Alternative Break Out Areas

As part of our support for student wellbeing, the College will use alternative break out areas at recess and lunch when required. Typically, this will occur when extreme weather no longer permits the use of our normal break out areas for student gatherings and alternative areas will be opened to keep students away from the elements. Information has gone out to students this week regarding how this will look at the College for the duration of Term 2.

Wellbeing Team

This week, students were provided with information on gratitude; which is a feeling of thankful appreciation. It is about appreciating and being thankful for the goodness in life. At times like this, when life seems a little out of control, gratitude can help to ground us and our children, providing a sense of calm and reducing the spiral of negative thoughts. Gratitude is also a mood booster as it helps us to tune into the good things in our lives that can easily be overlooked.

It can be a challenge to talk to teens about being grateful, however trying to connect on a regular basis about positives in their lives, even for a minute or two, can make a difference. Asking a simple question, such as 鈥淲hat is something that has made you happy today?鈥, 鈥淲ho do you admire the most?鈥 or 鈥淲hat are you enjoying the most at the moment?鈥, can start a conversation, or at least get your teen thinking about what they are appreciative for in life.

for more ideas on how to talk to your child about gratitude.

You can also encourage your child to identify what they are grateful for in other ways, for example by using the Happyfeed app, which is a teen-friendly app and easy way to record daily gratitude.

College Uniform

Due to difficulties in meeting the high demand of winter uniform items, together with the restrictions placed on the Uniform Shop access, there will be an additional week where students will be able to wear their summer uniform. Students participating in Physical Education classes Y7-12 are permitted to wear their sports uniform on those days. The wearing of full winter uniform will commence on Monday 18 May. 秀秀直播 News Term 2 Week 2: From the Leader of Wellbeing Primary

It has been so pleasing this week to see the smiling and happy faces of so many students back at school. I would like to begin our newsletter this week by thanking all members of our school community for working so well together to navigate through this challenge of COVID-19. From teachers and support staff, to parents and students, there has been an extraordinary level of understanding and compassion for others. At the beginning of the year I spoke with many families at the Parent Information Evening about our Marist theme for 2020 鈥 Creating one new Humanity. The 鈥榟umanity鈥 we have been creating is one I hope we can reap the benefits of for years to come. People have come together to support each other in ways they never imagined. New relationships have been formed in our community, and old ones strengthened. I am very proud to be a part of such a strong, community minded school and I hope that you are too.

The focus in class for the coming weeks is all about providing a sense of calm and belonging. Many students have adapted well to change over these past weeks, but it is important students feel settled in their classrooms and with their friends for Term 2. We are looking forward to welcoming all students back this term and continuing to provide opportunities for all children to grow.

Mothers Day

This morning we held a beautiful Mothers Day Liturgy via live stream to celebrate the wonderful mothers and grandmothers who are a part of our great community. If you missed the liturgy please to watch it.

Our Y3-6 students also spread the love during drop-off by holding signs and cheering all of the mothers as they drove by. A wonderful social distancing initiative by our RE Coordinator, Mrs Jane Short.

Remote Learning 鈥 Student Reflections

This week, some of our Year 6 students provided a reflection on their experiences throughout the remote learning period. A big thank you to each of these students for offering their insights during a challenging time.

“My experience with remote learning was excellent and I loved how the teachers made all the activities enjoyable, interesting, and easy to do at home. Remote learning gave us a chance to focus on our work while still having fun. We had many lessons that involved being outside and getting fresh air. It was sad to not see our friends every day, but our teachers made sure we still connected with classmates and teachers. I am very happy to be back at school, as I love working with other people and collaborating.” Ruby Hankinson

“I loved how with remote learning the teachers had fun and appropriate work. I loved how teachers answered all questions and anything we were confused on they explained it as well as possible which really helped at home. I also loved Wellness Wednesday because we had time to focus on ourselves and the activities were really interesting. I also enjoyed the activities where we had to get out of the house and do things creatively. This made me enjoy every moment of online school! My experience with remote learning was exceptional, the teachers were so thoughtful during this time.” Lola Corbett

“I enjoyed remote learning, I found it good that the teachers put up all the work for the day so you can read through it all before you start. I also loved doing some of the work by myself and that I could do the work in my own speed and time. The teachers helped with anything you needed by answering questions on SeeSaw and you could contact them anytime. The teachers also put up fun activities during the day. The thing I missed most was not being able to socialise with my friends and I also missed seeing the teachers at school. I loved remote learning, but I am extremely happy that I am back at school to see all of my friends again.” Ruby Bell

College Uniform

Due to difficulties in meeting the high demand of winter uniform items, together with the restrictions placed on the Uniform Shop access, there will be an additional week where students will be able to wear their summer uniform or their sports uniform with light blue or faction polo shirt. The wearing of full winter uniform will commence on Monday 18 May. The College has recently updated the uniform requirements, and details can be found here.

Assemblies

Next week, we will be recommencing both our Monday Morning Prayer Assemblies and Friday Merit Assemblies. Parents will be able to participate by watching online either through a live or pre-recorded video link. These links will be shared with parents in due course. We look forward to once again starting our week by gathering together in prayer and reflection. Similarly, we look forward to being able to celebrate the academic and personal achievements of our students.
