ÐãÐãÖ±²¥ News Term 2 Week 4: From the Leader of Early Childhood

Children are naturally curious – from birth they are listening, watching, wondering and exploring. Children’s daily experiences and interactions are how they learn about the world around them. Play is one of the most powerful and important interactions children have; it has a very strong influence and effect on their social, emotional, physical and cognitive development. Research continues to show us that the best learning occurs when children are playing.

The Early Childhood Staff at ÐãÐãÖ±²¥ are strongly committed to providing a play-based learning experience for our students. In doing so, they are encouraging students to actively talk, write, read and think. Through the three main types of play-based learning (child initiated, guided and adult-led) children can: discover, take risks, negotiate, problem-solve, be creative, learn to interact with others and develop self-awareness. Teachers carefully plan lessons and provide students with feedback so that students are challenged in their learning and become critical thinkers, whilst also successfully negotiating and collaborating with others.

Assembly

Last Friday, Marian Campus held its first live-streamed assembly. A special thanks to Ms Anderson, Mrs Kadak and the students of Year 1 Blue who hosted the assembly and informed us about their remote learning experiences. The students also sung a fantastic song, demonstrating how much they missed their friends whilst in remote learning mode. It was very obvious that there is lots of joy in their return to face-to-face learning and how much they are enjoying the opportunity to be back learning collaboratively with their friends.

Future assemblies will continue to be live-streamed whilst restrictions prohibit our families from being able to attend in person. A link will be distributed to families via email, the day prior to the event.

ÐãÐãÖ±²¥ News Term 2 Week 4: From the Deputy Principal Wellbeing Secondary

Food Technology Art

Marcellin students are back and working through their normal school programs. It has been very exciting to welcome all our cohorts back to onsite learning and I would like to thank the staff for the immense amount of work that has gone into our switch back from remote learning.

It has been pleasing to see the positive attitude the students have shown towards their classes and the way they have interacted with one another. While social distancing and hygiene are important to maintaining the safer environment we currently enjoy in Western Australia, students do have opportunities to come together in small groups and reconnect as peers. As restrictions slowly ease we will continue to work on creating more opportunities for them to get involved, represent their Guild and represent ÐãÐãÖ±²¥.

Locker Update

As part of the College’s Capital Development Plan, the Senior Leadership made the decision to upgrade the 30-year-old metal lockers and create more flexible learning areas around the College. In line with our Vision for Learning, how we use learning spaces is changing and this incorporates how we use lockers and what equipment students use at school. As we continue to redevelop learning spaces, this has reduced the space available to adequately store lockers and provide shelter for the students from the elements. Since early 2019, we have been phasing out the old lockers and have purchased a newer design that provide students with adequate space to store items safely.

In light of social distancing and remote learning, the College fast tracked this process as students would be working offsite and not require their lockers in Term 2. As we are all aware, this plan changed significantly at the start of Term 2 and we have had students onsite while this upgrade has occurred. I know this has been a challenging time for students, but I would like to commend them on the way they have conducted themselves and carried on during this process.

With social distancing restrictions easing, student access to lockers will begin to resume from midway of Week 5. We will be rolling out locker allocations to the Years 7 and 12 cohorts from next week and other year groups will follow. Each student will be allocated a locker for use and this will be facilitated by Pastoral Care Teachers and Leaders of Wellbeing.

Students will receive more information at the start of Week 5 about the new locker system and other changes that will make life easier for them moving around throughout the day and looking after their belongings.

We appreciate your patience and understanding during this transition.

RAP & Principal Assembly

Week 5 will see the launch of the College’s Reconciliation Action Plan across PK-12. This will occur on Wednesday via a live stream that will be shown across all three campuses.

Following the launch, Marcellin students will move into our first Principal’s Assembly for the term. This will be filmed from the College’s Marist Auditorium and streamed into PCG classrooms. The assembly will be our first opportunity to come together as a Years 7 – 12 campus and, as part of the assembly, we will be acknowledging our Year 7 Guild Representatives and outstanding student achievement from Term 1.

Wellbeing Team Update

The College’s Wellbeing calendar continues to operate and provide a number of activities throughout Term 2. Students have received information sheets via TEAMs and SEQTA regarding maintaining a healthy mind and body which we hope are helpful. Students have also taken part in Guild activities this week, with more events planned for Weeks 6 and 7.

If students ever feel they would benefit from some form of assistance, we would encourage them to speak to a trusted adult in their lives. At the College, PCG teachers, Leaders of Wellbeing and the Counselling Team are always happy to help and assist students.

Weeks 6 and 7 Activities

In Week 6, students in Years 7 – 10 will take in part in different activities during extended PCG. Our Years 7 and 8 students will compete in their Cross Country races that were postponed in Term 1 while our Years 9 and 10 students will enjoy an art challenge set by the Arts Department. Photos and highlights will be published in the next edition of ÐãÐãÖ±²¥ News in Week 6.

In Week 7, the year groups will swap activities so that each cohort is given the opportunity to take part in the art challenge and the Cross Country.

It was wonderful to see students able to collaborate in small groups and working as a team to complete the tasks provided. Guilds were also awarded points for the number of students in the correct Guild uniform and participating on the day.
