秀秀直播 News Term 2 Week 6: From the Head of Primary

At 秀秀直播 we foster creativity by promoting a growth mindset allowing students to achieve to their full potential. Staff have been trained in developing a growth mindset and research proves this way of thinking significantly benefits student learning. A growth mindset, a differentiated curriculum and our Vision for Learning allows each student to achieve success at their level, develop in confidence and be challenged while at school. In Year 1 this looks like students creating tallies, graphs and making predictions about favourite ice-cream flavours and in Year 6 it looks like students designing a device to detect natural disasters.

Fitness Club 鈥 Lavalla听

Last Wednesday, Lavalla students enjoyed the inaugural Fitness Club run by Mrs Pugh.听听The students skipped, ran and took part in a fitness circuit.听听This will run every Wednesday starting at 7.45 am.听听All are welcome.

Retreat Confirmation Year 6

The Year 6 students completed their preparation to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation at their Retreat on Friday 31 May.听听Led by the 24:7 Youth Ministry Team, the students looked deeply at the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit.听听We support our Year 6 students with prayers as they complete their initiation into the Church.

鈥淚 found the Confirmation Retreat very informative.听听We split into small groups and would always come back together to revise what we had learnt in each session.听听We watched movie clips on the gifts of the Holy Spirit so that we could see real life situations where each were used.听听After each activity we played some sort of game to loosen our minds.鈥澨齋tefan Constantine

鈥淥n Friday at the Retreat we learnt about the Sacrament of Confirmation.听听I had a great day and听I听found it very interesting.听听We played a lot of fun games that everyone enjoyed.鈥澨齅aria Ledger

Holy Communion Retreat听

Our Year 4 students participated in the Holy Communion Retreat on Thursday 6 June led by the 24:7 Youth Ministry Team. This completes their preparation to receive the Sacrament and we wish them all the best as they will be able to participate fully in Mass. The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and working with the Youth Ministry Team.

Reconciliation Week听

Students were immersed in Reconciliation as they prayed for all Australians to unite for our future.听Each campus held a prayer assembly focusing on this year’s theme for Reconciliation Week 鈥淕rounded in Truth鈥.

Miss Sankar also created the Aboriginal flag made of the hand print of every Lavalla student containing a message of hope.

Marcellin Award

Congratulations to William Raats in Year 1 who has been recognised with a Marcellin Award for his hard work and commitment in keeping the school grounds clean by picking-up rubbish at lunchtime.

Isabel Burton from 3 Blue is this week’s worthy recipient of the Marcellin Award on the Lavalla Campus. Isabel has been acknowledged by numerous members of staff as someone who works hard, gives 100% effort in all situations and sets a great example.

Isabel actively volunteers to help others both in and out of the classroom. She is willing to support her classmates while still ensuring her own work is completed. Isabel quietly goes about getting a job done without thought of acknowledgement or reward. She uses her initiative and always offers help if someone is injured or unwell.

Isabel is always happy to include anyone in games and activities. She are valued by others as a group member because she shows excellent leadership skills while also remaining humble and allowing others to take the lead as well. Isabel also celebrates her peers鈥 gifts and talents.

The Marcellin Award at Marian Campus is drawn from submitted nominations each Wednesday morning at Prayer Assembly. At Lavalla Campus, the Marcellin Award is presented at campus assemblies to one student selected by the Leadership Team from submitted nominations.

Bushland at Lavalla听

When walking home from school, students should not cross through the bushland between the Lavalla Campus and University Avenue.听听We encourage parents to use the Kiss and Ride facility provided where staff are on duty.

Tinkering听

On Thursday 6 June, Year 6 were involved in a STEM activity called TINKERING.听 Tinkering gives students the opportunity to be creative, think critically and collaborate in an inquiry-based approach to STEM-rich learning.听听The day allowed our Vision for Learning 鈥淪hine through Discovery鈥 to be present as the students took apart various electronic devices, labelled the parts, and noted the purposes and complexities.听 Students then used the parts to create a natural disaster detector.听听We were very fortunate to have Year 6 parents and grandparents assisting the students.

秀秀直播 Parents听鈥 Cyber safety听

Parents are invited to the next 秀秀直播 Parents Event on Wednesday 12 June in the Marist Auditorium.听听Guest Speaker Susan McClean will discuss how parents can support their child to navigate the digital world. Please for more details.

Positive Mindset听

At 秀秀直播 we strive to promote a positive culture to promote student learning. An area focused on by the College Councillors and Social Worker is the impact of negative self-talk. Please to access information that discusses this issue.

Parking/Pick Up听听

A reminder to all parents/guardians to please abide by the parking regulations in the streets surrounding the College.听听Unfortunately, at times some vehicles are blocking full access to surrounding streets and those parking on the verge are often a hazard on footpaths used by students and the public.听听This is a particular problem around University Avenue.听听Your support is appreciated, thank you.

Multicultural Week

Buon giorno, n菒 h菐o, goedendag, gozaimasu, shalom, hola, god dag, salut鈥 to all!

Every year, during Multicultural Week, the Language Department endeavours to bring greater cultural awareness to 秀秀直播 through small events that celebrate the blessing of diverse cultures. Multicultural Week historically has been about celebrating individuals that have come from all over the world, as they bring their cultures, values and beliefs to this multi-cultural country of ours – Australia. As Australians we are proud to accept and embrace these differences.

This year throughout Multicultural Week, the students and staff at 秀秀直播 have enjoyed a variety of engaging events, including;

  • The Years 7 and 8 Multicultural Quiz
  • A Greek Flash Mob with the amazing Miss Battalis, the agile Mr Bochrinis and the talented little Zorbas!
  • Eating homemade gelato in the sun!
  • The scintillating performance of the 鈥淢oorditj Mob鈥

I welcome you to celebrate our unique culture in Australia. Happy Multicultural Week to all!

Saluti

秀秀直播 News Term 2 Week 4: From the Principal

This week at our Marcellin Campus Assembly, I spoke about the importance to the world of having a 鈥渂ig idea鈥. As children, we all dream about what we want to be when we grow up. As we grow, we start to conjure up ideas that we are keen to develop, lead and share with the world. This Term, I have had multiple students come to me with ideas that they want to share with our College and with the wider community. One was from a student in Year 5 who succinctly argued with evidence why the College needed to create more opportunities for recycling so to improve the impact on our environment. Two sisters from Year 2 and Year 6 want to set up a textiles group that would donate proceeds to Caritas from money raised from the sale of what they produce. For each of these proposals I witnessed passionate, engaged and determined young people.

On the weekend we as Australians voted in the Federal Election which gives us as citizens the opportunity to contribute and participate in defining the country we are and the one we want to become. Elections are touchstones in a democratic country in the consideration of these 鈥榖ig ideas鈥 known in political-speak as policies. At 秀秀直播 I want our students to believe that they can contribute their big ideas to the world. Ideas are not just for politicians or interest groups to take forward but for all of us. Ideas matter! Having passion for something matters; having a voice matters! Over 200 hundred years ago St Marcellin Champagnat had a 鈥渂ig idea鈥 to educate young marginalised rural children. Today this idea is alive and well in 80 countries across the world.

In 2019 it is incumbent upon all of us to participate and make a contribution here at school in our learning and in the wider community. You don鈥檛 have to leave school to participate, to engage and seek to be transformative.

In Term 3, there are two ways we can have our voice heard:

  1. At a school level, we are developing our Strategic Plan for the next three years and we will have a series of meetings with students, staff and parents to hear your ideas.
  2. I have written to our newly elected local Federal Member, Celia Hammond to visit our community to meet with our students and hear what is important in the lives of young people in the western and northern suburbs of Perth and therefore Australia.

St Marcellin contended that he wanted our students to be good Christians and good citizens. Let鈥檚 give our students every opportunity to do so.

Parent Engagement

One of the characteristics that is valued enormously at our College is parent engagement. The contributions, volunteering and presence of parents at 秀秀直播 is highly valued. Using just one example, this was never more evident than at our recent NPCC Meeting. Thank you to the twenty parents who came along to discuss and give input to the strategic direction of the College. We discussed early childhood engagement, the upcoming Capital Development Project and student wellbeing.

We have another opportunity for parents to attend our Community Forum where the Capital Development Project will be presented by our Architect. This will take place on Monday 27 May, 7.00pm, in the Marist Auditorium. for further information and to RSVP.

What is Parent Engagement?

Parent engagement in schools is defined as parents and school staff working together to support and improve the learning, development and health of children and adolescents. Parent engagement in schools is a shared responsibility in which schools are committed to reaching out to engage parents in meaningful ways, and parents are committed to actively supporting the learning and development of their children and adolescents.

Studies have shown that parent engagement in schools can promote positive education and health behaviours. Research shows a strong relationship between parent engagement and educational outcomes, including school attendance and higher grades. Parent engagement in schools has also been identified as promising protective factors for adolescent risk behaviours and outcomes.

An example of the importance we place on this is our next 秀秀直播 Parent evening which is facilitated by Susan McLean from CyberSafety Solutions. This event is to be held on Wednesday 12 June, 7.00pm in the Marist Auditorium.

It is not just within the school gates that this partnership and parent involvement is bound. Outside of the classroom and when at home, finding practical ideas for parents to engage in learning in a way that is meaningful and purposeful takes time. Ongoing parental involvement reaps benefits in many ways, including shaping positive attitudes. We value your participation!

Performing Arts Festival for Catholic Schools and Colleges 2019 Awards

The resounding success of Masquerade, the 2019 College Production, has been further recognised by the Catholic Performing Arts Adjudicators. The production received Outstanding Award recognition, the highest level of success that can be attributed in this section of the Performing Arts Festival for Catholic Schools and Colleges. Congratulations to all of those who collaborated to make this exceptional production come to life on the stage last Term.

National Simultaneous Storytime

On Wednesday 22 May, students on the Marian Campus participated in the National Simultaneous Storytime, an annual campaign that aims to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books. I had the great privilege of reading Alpacas with Maracas by Australian author and illustrator Matt Cosgrove. We had a lot of fun and the event highlighted the value of story-telling.

Year 6 Parliament House Excursion

The Year 6 students continued their leadership focus as they visited Parliament House last week. They learnt about how governments are formed, our electoral process and could compare their leadership qualities against politicians of the past.

Student Reflection

On Tuesday 14 May, the Year 6 classes went on an excursion to Parliament House. We participated in three activities. Firstly, we went to The Constitution Centre where we learnt about the levels of government, the leaders of Parliament and how the Queen is represented by a Governor General. We then visited the Electoral Centre where we learnt how to vote and enjoyed an activity where we voted for our favourite type of candy. Skittles won because they are the best! We also visited Parliament House where we were taken on a tour and learnt about the history of the building. We were very fortunate to see question time which is where the opposition asks the government questions about how they are running the country.

By the end of the day, we had learnt lots of new facts about Parliament House and how our country is run. It was a great excursion.
