秀秀直播 News Term 3 Week 10: From the Deputy Principal Wellbeing Secondary

As Term 3 comes to an end, I would like to take this opportunity to wish staff and students a wonderful break that is well deserved. Our students have worked hard throughout numerous assessments, celebrated our achievements and built Guild Spirit at our carnivals.

We wish the Class of 2019 all the best as they embark on their final school assessments and prepare for their ATAR exams and/or life after 秀秀直播.

We congratulate our Year 11 students who will now become the leaders of the College and represent our community in the closing months of 2019.

We acknowledge the hard work of our staff, in particular, those who will be leaving us at the end of the term.

A reminder that Term 4 sees the College uniform revert back to summer standards. It is important that we all start the new term in a positive manner. Students are reminded that they need to ensure their uniform meets the expectations of the College from day one. Please use these holidays to have a haircut, replace damaged items and ensure uniforms are comfortable and fit appropriately.

Counselling & Wellbeing Team

Thursday 12 September was R U OK? Day 鈥 the National day of action to encourage and empower everyone to regularly and meaningfully ask 鈥渁re you ok?鈥 to support those struggling with life.

The Marcellin Campus took part in a range of awareness raising and wellbeing activities. Students got involved by wearing stickers, watching a video about the 4-step process for checking in with a friend, and participating in games at lunchtime. We hope this highlighted our whole-school approach to students being both supported and connected with others. Our goal is for us all to check-in with each other regularly throughout the year.

As we move into the break and our Year 12 students conclude their time here at the College, we would like to congratulate them on this wonderful achievement. The Counselling Team wishes all students an enjoyable and restful break and we look forward to seeing you in Term 4.

Write A Book In A Day Competition

During Book Week, 22 students from Years 7-10 participated in the ‘Write a Book in a Day Competition鈥. The day required the groups of students to write a whole book in a single day; the competition was challenging to say the least!

It was by all means a very fun and productive challenge. It was amazing to just spend a day with friends and exercise the creative side of our brains to come up with a story fitting to a set list of criteria, all in one school day. You would think having to write a 4000 word story would be a boring school activity, but it was the complete opposite. It was a day full of snacks, laughter, banter, and collaboration.

My team of 10 had all participated in the challenge last year, and it only got better this year. I wholeheartedly recommend for anyone to take up this competition when they see the opportunity arise next year. You definitely won’t regret it. It’s truly a memorable day and event, and I will definitely continue to participate in this activity when the chance arises again.

Author Visit 鈥 Mark Smith

On Monday 23 September, Mark Smith came to 秀秀直播 to speak to the Year 8 students about his experiences and motivations as an author. Mark explained his early experiences as a frustrated and disobedient teenager. He revealed that, through an accident that left him unable to do physical activity, he had to learn to read and thus decided to become a teacher and then an author. He spoke about his many rejections at the beginning of his writing career and how he had to learn to write properly before he could get his short stories published. He then transitioned into a novel writer and has now published three books.

The experience helped me to learn about the process an author has to go through to have their book published. Mark is an amazing author and has written three amazing books in ‘The Road to Winter’ series. Overall, it was a very informative and engaging presentation.

秀秀直播 News Term 3 Week 10: From the Leader of Wellbeing Early Childhood

The word education is derived from the Latin 鈥榚ducere鈥 = e- (out of) + 鈥揹ucere (to draw). This perfectly summarises how we seek to educate the young child through the utilisation of children鈥檚 agency in the learning process. Well-known educational theorist, Jean Piaget famously stated how children are not empty vessels ready to be filled with knowledge but are actively involved in acquiring new skills and knowledge through their interactions in social, cultural and educational settings.

As Term 3 comes to an end, we can look back and reflect on the many celebrations of children鈥檚 gifts and talents and the knowledge, skills and contributions that they bring to our learning environments. Whether a child鈥檚 gift lies in the domain of Mathematics, Reading, Sport, Music, Art or Dance, each of these gifts plays an important role in the life of our College. We are constantly striving to provide opportunities to utilise and celebrate each child鈥檚 gifts and talents.

Pre Primary – Year 2 Athletics Carnival

One example of our student’s opportunity to shine and celebrate their gifts and talents is through our annual Pre Primary – Year 2 Athletics Carnival which took place yesterday on the Lavalla Oval. to read more and see more photos from the day.

Student Reflection

鈥淚 appreciated how it was relevant to young people in particular. I certainly learned a lot and it really made me think. It is so easy to get caught up in this ‘artificial’ world of fake news and social media. It is so ironic how technology has the ability to connect people while disconnecting people at the same time. One of the biggest challenges for my generation I think is understanding what is and isn’t real because we think that seeing is believing. We often lose sight of what is really important in life – and that is the people around us from which we can learn so much from. I know I personally often forget to appreciate the people around me, but at the end of the day, the people in our lives are a gift from God. Technology makes it easy for us to access and share information, to socialise, to entertain ourselves etc. However, it is so important to disconnect, to ground yourself, be in the moment and be grateful.鈥 Year 10 Student
