ÐãÐãÖ±²¥ News Term 2 Week 4: From the Leader of Mission and Catholic Identity

St Vincent de Paul – Emergency Assistance Program Drive

A massive thank you to the ÐãÐãÖ±²¥ PK-12 Community for your donations. The cage going to Vinnies is literally overflowing with your generosity. United in Christ’s love, your strength of family spirit and collaboration in caring for those less fortunate than ourselves displays the true Marist charisms.

Prayer Opportunities

During our time of isolation we learnt of the importance of stopping, being still and listening. In building on these lessons, we now offer two more opportunities for our students; a Wednesday lunch-time reflection and Friday morning Student-led Prayer, facilitated by the Faith and Liturgy Captains. The themes have focused on strong women, gratitude, the environment and prayer for exams. Staff and students are invited to attend the Student-led Prayer sessions with the Captains from 8.20am in the Chapel.

Remar / Gamechangers

Over the last two weeks, the Remar and Gamechangers groups have been meeting to reconnect and reflect on their experiences apart during isolation. They were excited to continue building their knowledge and skills as they look for opportunities to serve our community.

Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week is recognised and celebrated from 27 May – 3 June. The theme for 2020 is “In this Togetherâ€. It is also 20 years since over 250,000 Australians walked across Sydney Harbour Bridge to show solidarity with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people for reconciliation.

ÐãÐãÖ±²¥ is committed to reconciliation and there will be several activities across the PK-12 community that allow students to learn and reflect on the importance of reconciliation. We are excited to launch our Reconciliation Action Plan on Wednesday 27 May. This plan lays clear our intents and actions that underpin our commitment to reconciliation. We are grateful for the support of Christine Sindley from Waangara Marra Consulting and the RAP Working Group for their consultation and input in helping ÐãÐãÖ±²¥ develop it first Reconciliation action Plan.

ÐãÐãÖ±²¥ News Term 2 Week 4: From the Leader of Wellbeing Primary

As students settle back into a more regular routine of school, they are once again becoming accustomed to their learning environment. But what exactly makes a good learning environment? There are the physical aspects of a learning environment such as flexible furniture, the multipurpose areas, and a range of opportunities for students to engage in play. But even more importantly is the ‘feel’ of the environment. Is my classroom a safe place to learn? Do I feel encouraged to take risks in my learning? Do I have opportunities to challenge myself?

One of the ways teachers help create these environments is through the expectations they set for their students. Good teachers set high yet achievable expectations; reinforcing these often and seeking to guide their students towards these at all times. This in turn helps students to develop their own expectations of themselves. These can be across learning, relationships, effort or behaviour; all with the goal of helping students be the best they can be while making ÐãÐãÖ±²¥ a place students look forward to coming to each day.

I would encourage families to chat with their child this week about the expectations they have. What type of learner do they want to be? Even more importantly, what type of person do they want to be? Discussions like these can be the first step in many years of success.

Assembly

This morning we held out first live-streamed Assembly for Term 2. It was so wonderful to be able recognise and celebrate the continued faith journey, learning achievements, contributions and efforts of our students once more. Our next assembly is in Week 6 and will include an item from Year 3 Red.

If you missed today’s assembly and would like to watch it .

Marcellin Award

Congratulations Luca Chester in Year 6 who was acknowledged today in receiving the Marcellin Award.

Every day, Luca comes to school with a beautiful, positive attitude that just seems to radiate across his friends and classmates. He is polite, respectful, and always prepared to engage with those around him. It is such a pleasure to see these qualities in a fine young man. Congratulations Luca on your award and great start to the year!

The Marcellin Award at Lavalla is presented at assemblies to one student selected by the Leadership Team from submitted nominations.

School Photo Day 2020

It’s time to get out your diaries! School photo day for the Lavalla campus will take place on Monday 14 September. School photos are a beautiful snapshot in time of a child’s life and we would love for all students to be in attendance at school on this date. Think of the memories you will have for the years to come! You might also be surprised to know it is not just parents and grandparents that treasure the school photos, many teachers adorn their walls with the photos of their past classes too! Further information around the schedule of the day will be sent out closer to the date.

Student Voice

Over the past few weeks, Student Councillors have been working with myself to explore different ways we can provide a voice to our students on campus. This week, students were invited to express their ideas, suggestions or feedback. Student Councillors will meet each week to respond to each idea or suggestion provided. While our Student Councillors cannot promise to make all of our wildest dreams come true, they can listen to each suggestion and respond to every student. We look forward to sharing some of these over the coming weeks.

Playground Expectations

This week I visited each class to discuss the expectations we have at lunch times. In particular, we spoke about the need to stay seated during eating time, respecting the play equipment, and returning to class on time. There are many small but frequent occurring instances of students making poor choices around these issues and these rules will be emphasised over the next few weeks.

Students have also been made aware once again of the ‘no hat no play’ policy of the College. Students without a hat are welcome in the library at lunch times, but otherwise will not be allowed to engage in outdoor play. Teachers will be reminding students of these expectations frequently over the coming weeks and we are looking forward to taking a more relaxed approach to our break times again soon.

ÐãÐãÖ±²¥ News Term 2 Week 4: From the Leader of Early Childhood

Children are naturally curious – from birth they are listening, watching, wondering and exploring. Children’s daily experiences and interactions are how they learn about the world around them. Play is one of the most powerful and important interactions children have; it has a very strong influence and effect on their social, emotional, physical and cognitive development. Research continues to show us that the best learning occurs when children are playing.

The Early Childhood Staff at ÐãÐãÖ±²¥ are strongly committed to providing a play-based learning experience for our students. In doing so, they are encouraging students to actively talk, write, read and think. Through the three main types of play-based learning (child initiated, guided and adult-led) children can: discover, take risks, negotiate, problem-solve, be creative, learn to interact with others and develop self-awareness. Teachers carefully plan lessons and provide students with feedback so that students are challenged in their learning and become critical thinkers, whilst also successfully negotiating and collaborating with others.

Assembly

Last Friday, Marian Campus held its first live-streamed assembly. A special thanks to Ms Anderson, Mrs Kadak and the students of Year 1 Blue who hosted the assembly and informed us about their remote learning experiences. The students also sung a fantastic song, demonstrating how much they missed their friends whilst in remote learning mode. It was very obvious that there is lots of joy in their return to face-to-face learning and how much they are enjoying the opportunity to be back learning collaboratively with their friends.

Future assemblies will continue to be live-streamed whilst restrictions prohibit our families from being able to attend in person. A link will be distributed to families via email, the day prior to the event.

Marcellin Award

Congratulations to the following student who received a Marcellin Award in Week 4.

Emily Hearne, Year 2 –  Emily received the Marcellin Award for being inclusive, kind and thoughtful in her dealings with other students in our school community. She displayed the Marcellin characteristic of Family Spirit, in the way she treats everyone with love, care and thoughtfulness.

The Marcellin Award at Marian Campus is drawn from submitted nominations each Wednesday morning at Prayer Assembly.

Justin had planned to be at the College last Term and we are very grateful that he was able to adapt his presentation to be online. It was very successful and we look forward to welcoming him back to the College in 2021.
