Secondary Update – Term 3 Week 2

Wellbeing Week – 5-9 August 2024

Marcellin Campus Attendance

Mr Andrew Watson wrote to families at the end of last term emphasising that every day matters, regardless of whether it is the last day of term, a Guild Carnival or an assessment day. All parents and guardians are required to make every effort to ensure their children attend school. A child may be at educational risk if their attendance falls below 90%. Additionally, low attendance levels can impact a child’s wellbeing and social connections. 

This week, families whose child has a Semester One attendance percentage of below 90% were emailed to alert them of their Semester One attendance percentage and/or request for a meeting to be scheduled with the relevant Leader of Wellbeing.

We acknowledge that there are many reasons for non-attendance at school ranging from personal, medical, family, education, relationship and community factors. This makes school attendance and ongoing attendance rates a complex task in some households. On behalf of our Wellbeing Support Services Team, I would like to share a guide for parents and guardians. This may support them in their efforts to encourage their children to attend school if school attendance is a combination of reluctance to attend AND high levels of distress about attending school: School Can’t: A Guide for Parents and Guardians .

Our goal is to promote strong school attendance and the importance of everyday attendance, whilst working in partnership with families regarding low attendance. If you have concerns about your child’s attendance or ability to attend school, please contact the relevant Leader of Wellbeing.

Secondary Guild Athletics Carnival

Our Guild Athletics Carnival is scheduled for Thursday 1 August at State Athletics Stadium. All students are to make their own way to the stadium and arrive no later than 8.25am. Some buses will depart the College at 8.40am for students who catch Transperth buses to school or walk to school, and will also return to the College at the end of the day. If your child needs to catch the bus from school or back to school, parents/guardians must email kate.thayer@newman.wa.edu.au by Monday 29 July as permission is required.

Students are to sign in with their Guild Coordinator in their Guild bay when they arrive to receive their competitor number. Year 12s are permitted to wear costumes and should arrive in these. Year 12 students are reminded that this is a College event and their costume and clothing choice must reflect this.

The Guild Athletics Carnival is a compulsory event and all students are expected to attend. By way of encouraging Guild spirit, students are discouraged from leaving the event early. If your child needs to leave early from the Carnival, parents/guardians need to contact the relevant Guild Coordinator by Wednesday 31 July and then sign-out at the Admin Office at the stadium.

ADF Long Tan Leadership and Teamwork and Future Innovators Awards

Students in Year 10 and Year 12 are invited to apply for the ADF Long Tan Leadership and Teamwork Award and/or the ADF Future Innovators Award. Participation in the awards program is open to all Australian schools. Students are asked to nominate themselves by completing the relevant nomination form and emailing it to Mrs Sarah Ellam by Monday 6 August. Students will be presented with the award at the Annual Awards Assembly or the Year 12 Graduation depending on their year level. Canteen IOUs

Since Term Three has started, our Canteen has experienced an increase in IOU requests and in addition to this, many IOUs remain unpaid. We ask that all families check their email accounts for any unpaid canteen purchases and settle these with the canteen as a priority.

OLNA Support

The College has purchased OLNA.com.au subscriptions for students who are sitting their OLNA assessment this term. Practice questions and full-length practice tests can be found by accessing the following website:

Students can log in using their student email. Their password is their first name with a capital letter eg. John.

In addition to engaging with online practice, students are encouraged to attend targeted workshops which will run after school in the lead-up to the next round of OLNA in the JHN Hub.

Recognition of State Representation

Congratulations to the following students for selection in the Western Australian teams in their respective sports:

  • Olivia Hildebrandt (Year 11) â€“ Olivia will represent Western Australia in the 2024 School Sports Australia National Cross Country Championship in Yarra Glen Victoria from 20 – 23 August 2024.
  • Jude Tanham (Year 11) â€“ Recently competed in the National Youth and Cadet Fencing competition as a member of the West Australian team, winning a bronze medal.
  • Caitlin Northmore (Year 11) â€“ Recently represented WA in the Under 17 National Beach Volleyball Championships. Caitlin and her partner won the Championship and she was voted MVP for this Division.
  • Will Malajcuk (Year 11) – Will has been selected as one of the youngest players for the Australian Under 19 Cricket Squad, having recently attended a training camp in Queensland, before an upcoming tour of India.
  • James Barnard (Year 11)- James was selected in the WA AFL State 16s squad which recently competed in the . 

State Representation is an honour and an important stepping stone in an athlete’s journey. We commend these students for their dedication and commitment to their sport.

Pathways and Careers Information: Year 11 

WACE (secondary graduation) requirements 

In Year 11 and 12, students are progressing towards their Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE), otherwise known as their secondary graduation. 

In order to achieve their WACE, students need to meet certain academic targets across Year 11 and 12. These are: 

  • Demonstrate the minimum standard of literacy and numeracy (either in Year 9 NAPLAN or in Year 10-12 OLNA). 
  • Be enrolled in English / Literature in Year 11 and 12. 
  • Be enrolled in at least 1 ‘List B’ (Maths / Science / Sport / Technology) subject. 
  • Achieve at least 14 C grades, with at least 6 C grades in Year 12 subjects. 

For students considering UniReady / UniPath in Year 12 

A reminder to students on the General Pathway who are considering UniReady / UniPath in Year 12 next year. It is expected that students from the General Pathway would have participated in extra-curricular activities such as work experience, VET Certificates, Leadership, Service, and/or College sport. General Pathway students who have not participated in any of these extra-curricular activities may not be eligible for UniReady / UniPath.

Early Offers 

Students and families are advised that applications for University in 2025 are open as of 1 May 2024. Early Offers for University in 2025 will not be made to students until 2 September 2024. The currently available information about Early Offers is in the table below. 

University Early Offer Information 
Curtin University – Early Offers are available for ATAR and non-ATAR students. 
– Must achieve WACE and meet any prerequisites. 
– Submit your application via TISC, putting your Early Offer course as your first preference. 
– If your predicted ATAR is five points above the ATAR score required for your selected course, you will receive an early offer that secures your place in Semester 1, 2025. Your offer won’t be dependent on your final Year 12 ATAR score. You will still need to complete WACE and meet the English and subject requirements for your course.   
– If your predicted ATAR is less than five points above the ATAR score required for your course, you will still receive an early offer for a place at Curtin. You will need to achieve a final ATAR that meets course entry requirements, and meet WACE, English and subjects requirements for the course. 
– If you are not studying the ATAR Pathway, your early offer will be conditional upon you meeting the admission criteria for your chosen course, achieving WACE and meeting Curtin’s English requirements.  
Edith Cowan University (ECU) – Early Offer calculated from your most recent school results including exams. 
– Must achieve WACE and meet any prerequisites.

Thinking of studying Medicine or Dentistry in 2025? 

All students who wish to enrol in Medicine or Dentistry in 2025 (including Assured Pathway at UWA) will need to sit the University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT) this year. 

Please see below for some important dates: 

  • 5 March 2024: UCAT bookings open 
  • 17 May 2024: Deadline to book your UCAT for 2024 
  • 10 June 2024: Deadline if you need to cancel your UCAT booking 
  • 1 July 2024: UCAT testing begins 
  • 9 August 2024: Last test date 
  • September 2024: Results available

Also, students applying for Medicine at Curtin University are required to sit the CASPER Test. CASPER scores are valid only for the next available admissions year, so applicants should only complete the test in the year immediately preceding their planned year of admission. 

The CASPER Test is held nationally and is sat online from home. Applicants are responsible for making their own arrangements to register for the CASPER Test. Available Casper Test dates are:

Primary Update Term 2 Week 11

Year 6 Red Assembly

In Week 9, the Year 6 Red class entertained the Lavalla Campus with an assembly all about the exciting new Years 3-6 building, and the process that went along with the construction. Whilst highlighting these amazing new facilities, Year 6 Red importantly reminded us about our ÐãÐãÖ±²¥ Norms and that it is through our own efforts and attitude that we create a successful learning environment for ourselves, and our peers. Thank you, Year 6 Red for this important message presented in an entertaining way.

Champagnat Day Celebrations

Champagnat Day, celebrated last Friday, was wonderful celebration of St Marcellin Champagnat and his connection with ÐãÐãÖ±²¥. Our students engaged in Mass to start the day, where they were able to learn more about who St Marcellin was, and what he accomplished in his life. As always, the students loved spending time with their buddies doing activities and participating in a fantastic lapathon – with beautiful weather! We also gathered to recognise and celebrate those students and staff members who were awarded with the special Marcellin Awards. Overall it was a wonderful day spent together as a Primary.

ÐãÐãÖ±²¥ Norms / Medals of Marcellin

Our new ÐãÐãÖ±²¥ Norms are now on our website and I encourage you to have a look at these expectations for our Primary students – ÐãÐãÖ±²¥ Norms – ÐãÐãÖ±²¥. Each week our staff and students will focus on one Norm, to discuss and unpack what that norm means for our students in their day-to-day school life.

In Week 8, Sienna (Marian) and Isabella (Lavalla) were drawn out of the raffle and congratulated for demonstrating our ÐãÐãÖ±²¥ Norm of Line up before going into class & enter the classroom quietly.

Harlem (Marian) and Kyle’s (Lavalla) names were drawn out of the raffle in Week 9 and congratulated for demonstrating our ÐãÐãÖ±²¥ Norm of Take responsibility for our actions and act honestly.

In Week 10, Zita (Marian) and Noah (Lavalla) were drawn out of the raffle and congratulated for demonstrating our ÐãÐãÖ±²¥ Norm of Raise our hand if we would like to speak.

Congratulations to all students who received a raffle ticket in Weeks 8, 9 & 10.

As it is the end of term, our winning faction (with the most ‘medals’) has been revealed at each campus! The results were very close amongst the factions. Our winning factions were:

Students in these factions received a prize of wearing free dress on the last day of Term 3. Congratulations to Brigid faction at both campuses.

The jars will now be emptied, and we start afresh at the start of Term 3!

URSTRONG – Lesson 4 Complete

Lesson 4 Review

All students through PK-6 engaged in URSTRONG Lesson 4 in Week 9. The areas of focus across our year levels in Lesson 4 were:

PK-2: This session anchors students in the ‘truths’ of friendship so they have realistic expectations. Students learn what respect looks and sounds like in their friendships.

Years 3 & 4: This session helps students identify the difference between healthy and unhealthy friendships and the impact that body language has on our friends.

Years 5 & 6: This session teaches students, step-by-step, how to resolve conflict with a friend. They learn how to handle a friend’s negative reaction and what to do if the conflict is online.

Lessons 5-8 will be rolled out next term across the primary.

Years 5 and 6 Speak Up Program

Our Years 5 and 6 students have been busy in class throughout Term 2 preparing their own original speeches as part of the “Speak Up” Program. The quality across these year levels was very high, and has culminated in the Speak Up finals on Wednesday of this week. The entire Lavalla Campus came together to hear some outstanding speeches from our eight finalists, who presented excellent speeches on a wide range of topics. The judging panel selected Vienna, Lucy and Lachlan to represent ÐãÐãÖ±²¥ at the upcoming finals. Good luck to these students and well done to all Years 5 and 6 students.

Lavalla Homework Club will continue next term. This will begin in Week 2 and conclude in Week 9.

Fathering Project

The Fathering Project at Marian Campus shared a wonderful event together on Friday evening of last week, with Bangers & Bingo! There was a huge turnout of dads, granddads and Marian students who had a brilliant time playing Bingo together and enjoying a sausage sizzle afterwards. A huge thank you to Matt Hamilton and his group of dads who organised and ran the event – a huge success! Keep your eyes out for the next Fathering Project later this year!

Primary Staffing

As we finish up Term 2, there are some staffing changes within the Primary. The following staff finish up their time with us at the end of Term 2:

I wish to thank the above staff members for their time, commitment and passion for their roles throughout Semester 1 at ÐãÐãÖ±²¥. They will be missed, but we wish them all the best for the next chapter of their careers.

We welcome the following staff members at the commencement of Term 3:

Sarah Francia (Pre-Kindy Red teacher, returning from Maternity leave), Maria Lynch (Italian Years 3-6) and Arden Lavelle (Years 3-6 EA). We are currently finalising the remaining Special Needs EA position.

Mr Kirry returns to his Years 3-6 Leader of Wellbeing role at the start of Term 3. I would like to make special mention and give my thanks to Mrs Jane Short, who has been in the Acting Leader of Wellbeing Role throughout Term 2, and has been outstanding.

End of Term 2

It is time to reflect on a busy, productive and exciting term as Week 11 concludes. There is much to celebrate from this term with individual student growth, achievement and engagement in their classrooms and school activities. Of note was the opening of the Years 3-6 building, which stands as a state-of-the-art facility for our students. With this Stage complete, we now look to the works ramping up for the new PK-2 and specialist classrooms over the coming months. We look forward to seeing the progress on the old Lavalla site throughout Term 3.

As we enter the holidays, I wish all Primary families a wonderful and relaxing Winter holiday break and look forward to seeing students back next term.

From the Vice Principal Term 2 Week 11

Marist Netball Carnival

On Friday 14 June, our Marist Netball Squad headed to Sydney for the 27th Marist Netball Carnival. The team attended the opening mass on Sunday, followed by team photos and dinner at St Joseph’s College in Hunters Hill.  

The tournament was held at Sydney Olympic Park in Homebush, beginning with a round-robin competition. Our team competed in 5 games on Monday and 7 games on Tuesday. On Wednesday, they partook in their final two matches. Entering the semi-finals in 8th place, they faced Cardijn College, who were ranked 5th. Despite a strong second-half comeback, we narrowly lost by 2 goals. The squad then played St Patrick’s, the host school, in the final for 7th and 8th place. In another intense game, the team secured a win, finishing 7th – an improvement from last year’s 9th place. Sacred Heart College, Adelaide went undefeated throughout the tournament, winning the Champion School title for the second year in a row. 

The girls played exceptionally well, with various players receiving ‘Player of the Day’ awards, highlighting the talent across the team. Special congratulations to Madie Peou, who was named in the Highly Recommended Team, an honourary team recognising the best players at the carnival.

Champagnat Day

On Friday 14 June, our College community came together to honour our founder, Saint Marcellin Champagnat. The day began with special Eucharistic celebrations across the College, fostering a sense of unity in faith and gratitude. Following this, we presented the prestigious Champagnat Awards to students and staff who exemplify the Marist Characteristics of Family Spirit, Simplicity, Presence, Love of Work, and In the Way of Mary. Year 11 Retreat, Leadership Day and Dinner Dance

Last week, our Year 11 students participated in two special days filled with enriching activities and meaningful discussions.

On Thursday, the Youth Ministry Team led a retreat program in the Marist Auditorium, focusing on life choices and character building. Students were challenged to appreciate the importance of resilience in overcoming life’s challenges and to understand the impact of their positive and negative choices.

Friday focused on themes of Dignity and Vulnerability, Leadership, and Legacy, presented by members of the College Executive. The afternoon provided an interactive session with a leadership panel featuring teachers and student captains, followed with time for legacy planning. The day concluded with a joyous Dinner Dance at Ambrose Estate.

A huge thank you to Mr Van Der Heever, Mr McClorey and Mr Husband for organising these memorable occasions for our Year 11 students.

Winter Music Night

The 2024 Winter Music Night was held on Monday 10 June featuring solos from our Marcellin Scholarship students, Marcellin and Lavalla Instrumental and Vocal Ensembles. Performances included the Clarinet Ensemble, Symphonic Winds, Ukelele Club, Jazz Combo, Year 3 Strings, Chamber Strings, Lavalla Choir, Lavalla Rock School, Lavalla Strings, Concert Winds, Ruah, Certificate III – Top Deck. Congratulations to all who performed on the night and thank you to staff and parents for their ongoing support.

Semester One Reports are now available for viewing on SEQTA Engage. We encourage you to take the time to review the reports with your child/ren, discuss the report attributes and achievements, and celebrate their growth points. This is an excellent opportunity to set goals and address areas needing improvement together. By engaging in this process, you can help your child/ren recognise their strengths and identify strategies for academic growth. Champagnat Day Activities

We are excited to approach our annual Champagnat Day celebration which will take place on Friday, 14 June. This date has been chosen to accommodate our senior students who will be sitting exams during the actual feast day on 6 June. This adjustment maintains the tradition of celebrating Champagnat Day at a time that allows all students to participate fully.

This year, our celebrations will centre around the Mass and an awards ceremony. We will begin with a special Champagnat Day Mass, followed by the presentation of the Champagnat Awards to outstanding students from each year level and dedicated staff members. In addition, we will recognise several staff members with service awards for their contributions.

After the Mass and awards, our primary school students will participate in the Annual Lapathon. This event is a wonderful opportunity for our students to raise funds for LifeLink, supporting the Catholic agencies in Western Australia that provide essential assistance to those in need.

Traditionally, we have hosted various activities such as bouncy castles, food stalls, and other fun events following the Mass and awards. However, for the past three years, these activities have been affected by rain, limiting our ability to enjoy the day to its fullest.

To ensure better weather and greater enjoyment, we have rescheduled this part of the celebration to 15 August, coinciding with the Feast of the Assumption of Mary, the patronal feast day of the Marist Brothers. On this day, students will attend Mass and then enjoy a fete and a student-led concert in the afternoon. Due to current restrictions on inflatable amusements, we are planning an exciting fete where each class or year level will contribute a stall or activity.

Marist Netball Carnival

The Marist Netball Team, coached and managed by Miss Jorja Clark and Miss Tiyana Kerimi, has been diligently preparing for their upcoming tournament in New South Wales. This morning, the team had an exciting match against the Marist “Old Girls” in the Gymnasium, followed by a delightful breakfast shared by both teams.

Our team departs for Sydney next Friday. Their itinerary includes a cultural day on Saturday, the opening Mass, team photos, and dinner on Sunday, and the tournament will take place from Monday, 17 June to Wednesday, 19 June. The team is set to return on Thursday, 20 June.

On behalf of the entire ÐãÐãÖ±²¥ community, we extend our best wishes to the Marist Netball Team. We are proud of your hard work and dedication, and we look forward to cheering you on as you represent our school. Safe travels and good luck!

Year 10 Preparation for Subject Selection

Throughout this term, our Year 10 students have been actively exploring their subject choices for Senior School. They have attended presentations from Learning Area leaders and reflected on their strengths and interests using their Careers Booklet.

On Tuesday 18 June, students and their families will attend the Careers Expo. This event provides opportunities to engage with Learning Area teachers and representatives from universities, TAFEs, and other institutions. In the evening, there will be a presentation outlining pathway offerings, SCSA requirements, and next steps for determining the right pathway.

The process culminates in Subject Selection mentoring sessions on 15 July. Each student will be guided by a College Executive or Middle Leader to make informed choices, aligning with our Vision for Learning: striving for individual excellence, valuing student voice, fostering metacognition, and recognizing each student’s unique gifts and talents.

These mentoring sessions also enable parents and guardians to positively partner with teachers, share responsibility for their child’s education, and actively support the College’s holistic approach to faith, learning, and wellbeing. Together, we celebrate the individual pathways and achievements of each student.

From the Principal Term 2 Week 8

Dear Parents and Guardians 

It is wonderful to be back in our ÐãÐãÖ±²¥ Community after seven weeks of undertaking the Marist Pilgrimage and Professional Renewal Leave.  

At the Pilgrimage, I had the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of St Paul and St Marcellin. St Paul’s three journeys into Asia Minor and Greece help spread the Gospel in those early years after Christ. The Paulene Church has formed our modern expression of faith and is evident in our own Marist Spirituality and Mission. Time spent in Champagnat country at the Hermitage, La Valla, Le Rossey and Lyon deepened my understanding of St Marcellin Champagnat’s vision, and work to make Christ known and loved to the forgotten and downtrodden in the most tumultuous times of the French revolutionary period. I hope to write more of these reflections in newsletters to come.  

I would like to thank Mr Michael Chiera and Mrs Beth Murphy whose leadership as Principal and Vice Principal in my absence was so positive and professional. Mrs Sarah Pagett assumed the role of Deputy Principal, Teaching and Learning K-12 and Ms Nicki Winterbourn covered Sarah’s role as Leader of Learning Support. Michael, Beth, Sarah and Nicki performed outstandingly and received excellent support by the College Executive and the whole staff. I thank Mrs Glenda Gillespie who took care of the Director of Finance and Operations’ role while Mr Steve Halley-Wright was on long service leave.  

Feast Day of St Marcellin  

Yesterday, June 6 marked the Feast Day of St Marcellin Champagnat. Our examination period falls on this date, so we will celebrate Champagnat Day fully next Friday (please see the Vice Principal’s section for details).  

St Marcellin faced many obstacles and uncertainties in his mission to provide education to young people, yet he remained steadfast in his commitment to making Jesus known and loved. As families and teachers, we are entrusted with the sacred task of shaping the hearts and minds of young people, we are grateful for the example of St Marcellin Champagnat, whose life continues to inspire us in our work as a ÐãÐãÖ±²¥ community. This year we celebrate the 25 Anniversary of the canonisation of St Marcellin Champagnat.  

In my pilgrimage, I was fortunate to be in Rome for this celebration and view the wonderful statue of Marcellin that sits on the outside wall of St Peter’s. Here is a wonderful reflection of the statue and I think it encapsulates our Marist Way. Happy Champagnat Day! 

The statue of Marcellin portrays his strength and determination. Upon his shoulders he bears the burden of universal childhood with tenderness and sensitivity. His essential human traits are given a Christian dimension though the symbol of the crucifix that he holds in his left hand. Children, especially those who are poor and neglected, are waiting upon the kind of educational setting that will assure them of being secure and loved. To create such a setting was Marcellin’s goal, and it radiates from the statue that brings to mind the image of the Good Shepherd. The positioning of feet and hands expresses an affective interplay, the good soil that receives both the word of God and the formative experiences of education. The child on the shoulders leans upon the head of Marcellin, a position from which to look out upon life. At the same time, the child’s foot reposes secure on Marcellin’s right hand. In its turn, the child-figure at the sculpture’s base leans against Champagnat’s foot to express a personal relation. The open book in the child’s hand recalls the educational opportunity in which the child will find delight; and the countenance bespeaks a special way of viewing life. The message: Marcellin’s humility and simplicity. 

Opening of Lavalla Building  

The joy of celebration continued this week with the first days of occupancy at Lavalla of the Year 3-6 building.  It is a superb facility supporting upper primary education and bringing us one step closer to One Campus One Community. We are planning the opportunity for families to view our new facility once the settling in process has taken place.
