End of Year Celebrations

At ֱ, we shine through celebration of our faith, achievements, effort, and contribution. Celebration builds strong communities and plays a major role in social, emotional and academic growth, learning and faith development. It encourages a sense of belonging, group coherence and purpose.

In celebrating, we encourage intrinsic motivation to develop the attributes ofcourage and dedication, to achieve our full potential

To enrich the success of our community we celebrate the gifts, talents and achievements of each member and acknowledge the role that self-discipline, perseverance and determination contribute to striving for individual and collective excellence.

In our Vision for Learning ‘Shine through Discovery’ – let your light shine (Matthew 5:16) this pedagogical pillar Celebrate invites our students to recognise their own self worth. Each child has gifts and talents and it is in the space we create in their learning that aims to invite them into participating whole-heartedly into their endeavours.

In our Strategic directions framework we have prioritised a culture of excellence that encourages our children to flourish, co-learning and co-constructing with their teachers in discovering and devising new methods and content to ensure that we always get our best learning experience. It is worth noting that St John Henry ֱ, as an academic, challenged his students to be excellent in all endeavours that they pursue. It is this same intent that we endeavour to achieve at ֱ for our students.

Next week marks the start of end of year events where we celebrate the achievements of 2021, commencing on:

– Thursday 25 November with the Years 7-11 Awards morning

– followed on Tuesday 7 December with the Years 3-5 Awards and Year 6 Mass and Graduation.

– Our final end of year event is on Wednesday 8 December with the PK-12 Christmas Carols on the Marcellin Campus Oval.

Marist Schools Australia Alumni Project

2022 marks the 150th year of Marist education in Australia. For a century and a half, Marists have contributed to the education of hundreds of thousands of young Australians. In a spirit of thanksgiving to God, Marists will recognise and celebrate the privileged work and service to the Church in Australia through our schools by so many dedicated and committed people.

One of the Projects for the sesquicentenary of Marist education in Australia will be the Marist Alumni Project. This project has been designed to identify and celebrate significant contributions Marist educated women and men have made to our nation over the past 150 years, echoing the dream of Saint Marcellin for Marist education, “to form good Christians and good citizens.”

The main outcome of this project is the creation of an Anthology of Outstanding Australian Marist Alumni. The Anthology is a way of recognising those alumni who have made a significant and outstanding contribution to Australian life. The intent of the Marist Alumni Project is to capture some of those who have truly made their mark on Australian society.

I will be working with the College Council and our Archivist to delve into ֱ’s history to discern the most appropriate nominations to put forward.

Tuition Fees

In determining the 2022 tuition fee increase, the College Finance Committee and Council were very conscious of the need to set fees at a level that provides the College with the essential income to meet its ongoing financial commitments now and into the future. In addition, we have faced the challenges presented with the changing funding agreements, resulting in a reduction in our transition funding and reduced State Government funding. Please click here to access the College fees and charges for 2022.

COVID-19Staff Vaccinations

As mandated by the Western Australian Government, I wish to inform families that ֱ is currently implementing this directive, ensuring that by the commencement of the 2022 school year all staff onsite at ֱ are double vaccinated against COVID-19.

All Saints and All Souls Day

The week beganwithNovember 1and 2, where in the Catholic Tradition we celebre All Saints and All Souls Day.Pope Francis reminds us that“Saints are notsuperpeoplewho are born perfect, but rather ordinary people who follow God with all their heart”. An important reminder that all of us can be saints in the way we choose to live.

All Souls Day is an opportunity to remember the people in our lives who have died and the important role they played in our formation. For the month of November,a prayer table has been set in the Chapel that will allow staff, students, and families to write the names of their loved ones and place it in ourbowl. This bowl will be offered upon Thursday morning Community Mass, where we will remember thosespecial people in the lives of our community.

Marist Global Network

Over three days, the Marist Institute launched its Marist Global Network of schools which ֱ is proud to be connected. Our College had a special role in creating a video that captures how we as a Marist community are connected to this global family. This network offers an exciting opportunity for staff, students and families as we continue to consider our place in the world and how we through our Family Spirit, can follow in the way of Mary, to make Jesus Christ known and loved.

ֱ News Term 4 Week 4: From the Leader of Primary

If you are like me, you will have rejoiced wholly and completely in the news of the safe rescue of Cleo Smith this week. I never thought I would be the type of person to become so emotionally involved in something outside of my own personal world, and yet like many people, I could not help but shed a tear at the wonderful news that she would be reunited with her family. I think this struck a chord with so many people, because within Cleo’s story, we could all see our own children. My message to students at our morning gathering this week was simple – go home and hug your Mum and Dad. Tell them you love them and tell them often. We never know what every new day will bring in our world, and moments or stories like this have a way of bringing everything into perspective.

Sometimes we grumble and groan or frustrate each other, but at the end of the day we also love each other too, and we need to take the time to share this with each other and share it often. I am sure there were many students who get anextra tight squeeze from Mum and Dad this week.

Arts Festival

Last Wednesday we welcomed all families from across the College to our PK-12 Arts Festival held in the Maris Auditorium. It was amazing to see so many examples of beautiful artwork right across the all the years of our school – very inspiring for our younger students indeed. What I enjoyed most though, was watching the faces of our younger students, especially when they spotted their artwork, taking photos with Mum and Dad, beaming with pride about their achievements. Another highlight of the evening was the intimate space created by our solo and small group musicians who were playing at the entrance to the Auditorium seating. It was so beautiful to see the smiles on their faces as they played to a very receptive and respectful audience. It encouraged me to share this with all staff and students the next day – to find the joy in life and celebrate these moments as much as possible.

Socktober

Last Friday, students all over the school wore their brightest and colourful socks to take part inSocktoberfor Mission month– an event thatencourages students across Australia to kick goals on and off the pitch to make a difference in the lives of vulnerable children in Thailand and around the world. Under the guidance of Mrs Short, ourmini-Maristscollected plastic bags, tape, and string to make their own soccer balls, just askids in Thailand would do. They played some games with some of our younger students across the week, culminating in a staff vsstudentsgame on Friday afternoon. Against all odds, and despite fitness levels that would fail to reach even the most minimum of standards, the teachers reigned supreme winning 1-0.

We owe a bigthanks for Mrs Short and ourmini-Maristsfor their efforts over the week, and toall ofour students who took part in the day so enthusiastically

Year 6 Family Life Incursion

On Monday of last week, students from Year 6 gathered separately as boys and girls to attend the ‘Becoming a Man/Becoming a Woman’ presentation from the CatholicMarriage & Fertility Services. This is a part of both their Health and Religious Education learning. Students spent time connecting with their own story oflife andexploringthe changes that create both physical and emotional change. They learned about thereproductivesystems, and how to care for themselves and others physically and emotionally. Students were encouraged to form healthy relationships with others, and to communicate openly with their parents. This was an important learning experience for students, and it was great to see so many students attend with a positive and mature outlook.

Welldone toall ofour students for taking part.

Auxiliary Bishop Don Sproxton to ֱ

Today we had the pleasure ofhosting theAuxiliary Bishop DonSproxtonattheMarian Campus. His pastoral visit coincided with his visit toSt Cecilia’sWembleyParish. Our relationship with theParish, and ourParishPriest,FrKaz,is an integral part of growing the faith life of our school.AtourEarly Educationcampus, introducing students to parish life is exemplified by our prayer liturgies and ourEarly Childhood EducationReligious Educationcurriculum.

This week, for example, we celebrated All Saints Day and All Souls Day with a beautiful liturgy in the Parish.Year 2 presented to their peers the litany of saints focussing on St Marcellin Champagnat, St John Henry ֱ, and St Mary of the Cross MacKillop. The invitation to prayer in the liturgy created a sense of what it means to be a part of our Marist community which celebrates family spirit, simplicity and presence through the relationships we develop.

In recent weeks the AustralianCatholicChurchheld its firstPlenaryCouncilMeeting.Theaim of this significant event in the AustralianChurch is to invite Catholics into a participatory spirituality that reflects our place in the world. At the heart of this intent remains the relationships that are formed through community that is in communion with each other.

In 2021 ourStrategicPriorityArea,A CatholicSchool in the Marist Tradition, focussed on the strategic intents,FaithFormationandCommunityOutreach, AdvocacyandService. The outcome of these intents is to invite our young people to participate in their faith by how they build communitythroughtheir presence and service.Theintroductionof ourGamechangersChristianLeadershipProgram and our service program inYears 7 and 8 and the growth of ourminiMaristprogram in thePrimary schoolhighlights our commitmentto service and living faith in a practicalandtangible way.

Significantly, the highlight every week in our school is our PK-12FamilyMass where students, families and staff gather to celebrate and give thanks for our community.I warmly invite all families to consider coming to ourMass which commencesat 8.10ameveryThursdayin the Champagnat Chapel.
