2018 Marist Cricket Carnival Billeting

秀秀直播 is honoured to be the host of the 2018 Australian Marist Cricket Carnival. The Carnival will run from Tuesday 4 December to Tuesday 11 December 2018. Five Marist Schools from Australia will compete and 65 competitors will take part.

Tournaments such as the Marist Cricket Carnival can only be held because of the generosity of those families who billet visiting athletes and we thank those families who have already offered their support. The financial implications of accommodating athletes in hotel/motel type accommodation would soon put an end to such competitions as for many families the cost of the trip would then be beyond their means.

We ask that the 秀秀直播 Community rally and assist in accommodating visiting athletes as we endeavour to make this Carnival a success. Having children on the Marcellin Campus is certainly not a pre-requisite for billeting athletes. We would be delighted to accept an offer to billet from families with children on our Marian and Lavalla Campuses.

The responsibilities of the billet family include;

  • providing the athletes with meals and a bed
  • laundry facilities
  • ensuring that the athletes meet all the Carnival requirements

Billeting athletes is a wonderful and rewarding experience for both the athlete and the host family. Perhaps one day your child may be fortunate enough to be selected to represent 秀秀直播 at a Marist Sporting Carnival and require the generosity of a Marist Family during their interstate stay!

If you are able to assist in providing a visiting athlete with accommodation during the Cricket Carnival please contact Tania Bailey tania.bailey@newman.wa.edu.au or 9204 9444 between the hours of 8.00am to 4.00pm Monday to Thursday. I look forward to hearing from you and am very happy to answer any questions you may have with regard to the Billeting Program.

An advertising flyer with an offer to billet form is attached for your convenience聽

Angelico Art Exhibition Awards

Congratulations to Grace Hasler (Year 12) for her recent award at the Catholic Education Western Australia Angelico Art Exhibition Awards. Her sculpture, “Survival”, was accordingly given one of the major awards, the Caritas Australia Art Award. The criteria for this Award is for artwork which most reflects the Caritas Focus for 2018 (Human Dignity, Preferential Option for the Poor, Solidarity, Subsidiarity and Stewardship of the Earth’s Resources). Mr Finneran was pleased to have been present for the presentation and to listen to Grace’s family speak of her amazing commitment to producing the artwork.

We also had a number of students, both Primary and Secondary, exhibit artwork at the Exhibition. Congratulate to all students for their effort and commitment to their art works.

Multicultural Week

Multicultural Week is celebrated on the Marcellin Campus from Monday 3 – Friday 7 September 2018.

A number of activities will be held on Campus during this week.聽

Write A Book In A Day Competition

As a part of National Book Week 2018, 18 students from Years 7-9 participated in the Write A Book In A Day Competition, organised by and supporting the Kids鈥 Cancer Project charity. The students worked in teams to write, illustrate and publish an entire book in a single school day. They produced some incredible work and should all be extremely proud of their monumental efforts. Two students, Maud Buchanan from Year 7 and Joel Frenzel from Year 9, have written about their experiences on the day.

Student Reflections

At 8.15am, on Wednesday 22 August, a group of middle school students came to the Library with one goal in mind: to have finished writing an entire book by 5.00pm that day. We were split into two groups, writing two different stories. In each group, there were authors, editors and illustrators. In each story, there were specific elements that we needed to include. Our elements were: a forensic scientist, a tennis player, a rabbit, the Simpson Desert and a jailbreak, as well as certain words, like 鈥渃lock鈥, 鈥渟ilver鈥 and 鈥減atch鈥. At the start of the day, we began with a strong plot, but along the way we changed certain things, meaning that at 10.00am, we were still planning! Having to cut back on our writing time, we weren鈥檛 able to get the desired amount of editing done. However, I think that we did very well, considering the time constraints and random themes. In the end, our story, 鈥極ut For The Count鈥 was an entertaining superhero narrative with some brilliant characters. There were lots of things that I got from the day, the main ones being a sense of teamwork, new friends and a proudness of what we accomplished. I think that the competition was a fantastic way to build writing skills and make new friends, and if there is one next year, I will definitely do it again.

Maud Buchanan, Year 7

On Wednesday 22 August 2018, 18 students from the College participated in the 鈥榃rite A Book In A Day Competition.鈥 After the students divided into two teams, the competition involved the teams to write a 4000 to 5000 word book with certain parameters. My team was known as Kool Kidz and Ko.

I got many things out of this competition. It tested my ability to work for long periods of time and my ability to stay calm in stressful situations. When we first received our parameters, my team split up into groups. Three people working on the setting, three people working on the characters and four people working on the story line. Once we put these key building blocks of our story together, we started the exciting process of creating our book. Again, we divided into groups, four amazing artists: Seb, Charlotte, Emily and Louis began to draw the illustrations while Jez, Tyler, Dylan, Ruby, Emilia and myself began to write chapters.

Throughout the day, we worked hard on our book, only taking small breaks at recess and lunch where we went down and saw our friends who weren鈥檛 participating in the competition. The competition tested our limits; our ability to stay calm and not get frustrated with each other. Finally, after working hard for roughly 9 hours and 15 minutes, we finished. We were all really happy with what we had created (titled 鈥楬opea鈥) and had lots of fun while doing so. I highly recommend participating in the competition next year as anyone can do so and you can do it with friends!

Joel Frenzel, Year 9
