ÐãÐãÖ±²¥ News Term 2 Week 10: From the Acting Principal

Raquel Carver

As advised to our College community earlier in the week, a ÐãÐãÖ±²¥ staff member, Raquel Carver, passed away peacefully last Sunday.

Raquel was a gifted educator and at ease with people from all walks of life. She is remembered fondly by all who came into her presence. During her life, Raquel fulfilled many roles, including that of teacher, mentor, pastoral care teacher, Liturgy Coordinator and companion to many students, parents and staff members at ÐãÐãÖ±²¥. We give thanks for her witness, faith and hope.

We pray for Raquel’s husband Michael, her parents Henry and Patricia, and brother Edward, members of her extended family, friends, ex-students and members of the ÐãÐãÖ±²¥ family who seek consolation at this time of such sadness, through memories, stories and community. May they be consoled in their sadness by the God who brings comfort and peace.

All loving God, we pray for Raquel who responded to your call to give herself to others by following Jesus as a witness in the way of Mary and Marcellin Champagnat as a Marist educator. May those whose lives have been touched by her be able to respond as generously as she did in all circumstances of life.

We pray that you welcome Raquel home and take her into your loving care forever.

2018 Annual Report

The 2018 Annual Report is now available via the College website for families to view. The Annual Report is a requirement for school registration and satisfies our compliance to both Marist Schools Australia and Catholic Education Western Australia. The report evidences the significant progress the College has sustained towards school improvement and community engagement. Thank you to the College Council and College staff for their commitment to realising the bold goals of our Strategic Plan.

Reconciliation Action Plan

During Term 2, the College has been working towards the creation of its first Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). The RAP is not only a strategic intent of the College through its Annual School Improvement Plan, but a firm commitment to place reconciliation at the very forefront of thinking within our College Community.

The RAP Working Group consists of 19 individuals from the College community. Individuals have been drawn from our parent, student, alumni, and staff community across the PK-Y12 College. This representative group is tasked with developing a plan that will carry forward the College’s aspiration to lead our community in reconciliation ‘actions’.

The support of facilitator Christine Sindley of Waangara Marra Consulting has been welcomed and fostered by the RAP working group. It is our hope to launch the 2020 ÐãÐãÖ±²¥ Reconciliation Action Plan during Term 4 this year.

College Tours

I acknowledge the significant undertaking teachers make to travel and support College Tours, Camps and experiences during their personal time. This week, tours departed for Canberra and Sydney on the Humanities Tour and New York for the inaugural Arts Tours. Opportunities such as these seek to challenge and immerse students in their learning and to foster quality collaboration and cooperation between staff and students alike. We look forward to hearing of these experiences upon return.

Capital Development Plan Update

Preparations and planning are continuing ‘behind the scenes’ in preparation for the commencement of the Years 3-12 Learning Hub build later this term. I am very grateful to the staff and students who have relocated to temporary arrangements for the start of Term 3. The disruption to students has been kept to a minimum for the start of Semester 2. Moving from ‘C’ block will be gradual and carefully considered over the course of Term 3.

Preparatory work for the bridge connecting the Lavalla and Marcellin Campuses will commence next term. I thank the Grounds and Maintenance team and the staff involved with supporting and planning this undertaking. For further information, please visit the College website .

Closing

At the end of a rich and busy semester, I encourage each of us to express our gratitude to teachers, support staff and peers who have walked with our young people, supported them and worked closely with them to achieve their goals. My prayer for our community is that all staff, families and students return next term, renewed and refreshed after the holiday break.

On Friday 28 June, the Year 5’s attended an excursion at Fremantle Prison as part of their History Unit which is focused on Colonisation of Australia and the impact of convicts.

As all families would be aware, Mr Finneran is taking Long Service Leave during Weeks 8, 9 and 10 of this term.Ìý As Acting Principal, I have great pleasure in presenting a snapshot of important events in the life of ÐãÐãÖ±²¥ over the past two weeks.

Champagnat Day
Ìý

Last Friday, our College Community came together to celebrate the Feast of St Marcellin Champagnat, the Founder of the Marist Brothers and the inspiration of Marist education. The great joy of this celebration is in the gathering for prayer and communion with the Secondary School Mass being celebrated by Fr Israel Quirit and the Primary School Mass celebrated by Father Dinh Chinh.

At the conclusion of the Marcellin Campus Mass, a number of long serving PK-12 staff were acknowledged for their committed and dedicated service to Marist education.

Whilst the weather made plans for fun and festivities challenging, we were still able to come together with great family spirit. Friendships were formed amongst our Primary buddies and the Battle of the Bands showcased the gifts and talents of our students and staff from the Marcellin Campus.

Please for more images of Champagnat Day at the Marcellin Campus, and for photos from the Primary School celebrations.

Marist Netball

My congratulations to our netballers who represented the College at the Marist Netball Carnival, hosted by Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic College in Alice Springs.

I had the pleasure of travelling with the team to Alice Springs last Saturday and spent the first few days with them.Ìý As I experienced, and what continued to be reflected throughout the week, was that our students conducted themselves in an exemplary manner, both on and off the court.Ìý The display of great sportsmanship and Marist spirit ensured an enjoyable and memorable experience for all.

The girls played with determination and spirit and performed strongly in the Challenge round of competition. Players Georgia Condon (Year 12), Sarena Kriletich (Year 10) and Holli Johnson (Year 11) were awarded Player of the Day over the course of the Carnival. I extend my thanks to Marnie Fitzpatrick (Coach), Ella Rosher (Manager) and Team Captain Taya Voysey for their support, care and leadership of the team.

Winter Music Concerts

The Winter Music Concerts held this week so beautifully displayed our Vision for Learning ‘Shine through Discovery’, with students showcasing their amazing talents through music, song and the arts.Ìý Both concerts were of a particularly high standard and most entertaining.Ìý I am sure those who attended either or both concerts will join me in congratulating our students on their very fine performances.

Mitchell Bristow

Our Primary families were advised on 14 June that Mitchell Bristow, Head of Primary, has been seconded to St Thomas’ Primary School Claremont as Acting Principal for Semester 2 2019, commencing at the beginning of Term 3.Ìý This is a great recognition of Mitchell’s sound leadership of the Primary school within our PK-12 community.

The College will restructure its leadership provision in the Primary school to ensure strong leadership is maintained for the duration of 2019.Ìý Further and more specific information will be communicated to Primary families over the course of the next few weeks.

We wish Mitchell every success in his new role.

ÐãÐãÖ±²¥ News Term 2 Week 8: From the Head of Primary

Champagnat Day

Friday 14th June saw our primary students come together at the Lavalla Campus for Buddy Day to celebrate St Marcellin Champagnat’s Feast Day (June 6th). Wet weather certainly did not dampen the spirits of our Marian and Lavalla students who enjoyed partaking in Marcellin Activities with their buddies in the morning and were still able to enjoy some time outdoors in the afternoon, playing with sport equipment and exploring the animals in the Petting Zoo. The K-6 Mass held in the Gymnasium was a highlight of the day, with the primary campuses coming together to reverently celebrate our patron’s Feast Day with Father Chinh. This was Father Chinh’s first time leading the entire primary school in celebrating the Eucharist and it was a lovely Mass! Ìýto see more photos from the day’s celebrations.

We can’t wait for our next Buddy Day celebrating the Feast of the Assumption!

iPad UseÌý

Parents are reminded that students at Lavalla are only permitted to use their iPads under direct teacher instruction and that students are not permitted to use their iPads before or after school without this direction. All students understand that iPads must travel to and from the classroom safely in their school bag.

Parents are further encouraged to establish and maintain expectations of iPad use at home. A reminder that messaging apps are not required for use at school and therefore parents may choose to remove those apps from student devices. If you do allow your child to utilise these apps, we strongly encourage close monitoring and the implementation of rules around their use. A further reminder that should parents need to get communication to students during the school day, the expectation is this will come via the office where a message will be directed to your child, please do not directly message your child via their device. They will be breaching school iPad expectations if they respond to you during the school day.

Marcellin Award

Congratulations to Griffin Chester from 2 Blue who earned this week’s Marcellin Award on the Marian Campus. ÌýGriffin has been recognised for sticking up for a friend who was being excluded and making sure they were able to join in. Well done Griffin!

We enjoyed performances by the Year 3 Choir and Year 3 Strings, Lavalla Choir, Lavalla String Quartet and Lavalla String Ensemble, as well as excellent individual performances by student musicians across Years 4-6. The evening was a wonderful celebration of the many musical talents of our Lavalla students and was a credit to their tutors, directors and Performing Arts leadership at ÐãÐãÖ±²¥. Thank-you also to all the parents who support their children in their musical endeavours.

Little Discoverer’s PlaygroupÌý

The second session of our ÐãÐãÖ±²¥ Playgroup was hosted this week. Mrs Rebecca Rose facilitated the playgroup session for children 0-3 years and their parents. Participants enjoyed a range of developmentally appropriate activities such as play dough, collage, dance, song and story time.
