ֱ News Term 4 Week 4 : From the Principal

Auxiliary Bishop Don Sproxton to ֱ

Today we had the pleasure ofhosting theAuxiliary Bishop DonSproxtonattheMarian Campus. His pastoral visit coincided with his visit toSt Cecilia’sWembleyParish. Our relationship with theParish, and ourParishPriest,FrKaz,is an integral part of growing the faith life of our school.AtourEarly Educationcampus, introducing students to parish life is exemplified by our prayer liturgies and ourEarly Childhood EducationReligious Educationcurriculum.

This week, for example, we celebrated All Saints Day and All Souls Day with a beautiful liturgy in the Parish.Year 2 presented to their peers the litany of saints focussing on St Marcellin Champagnat, St John Henry ֱ, and St Mary of the Cross MacKillop. The invitation to prayer in the liturgy created a sense of what it means to be a part of our Marist community which celebrates family spirit, simplicity and presence through the relationships we develop.

In recent weeks the AustralianCatholicChurchheld its firstPlenaryCouncilMeeting.Theaim of this significant event in the AustralianChurch is to invite Catholics into a participatory spirituality that reflects our place in the world. At the heart of this intent remains the relationships that are formed through community that is in communion with each other.

In 2021 ourStrategicPriorityArea,A CatholicSchool in the Marist Tradition, focussed on the strategic intents,FaithFormationandCommunityOutreach, AdvocacyandService. The outcome of these intents is to invite our young people to participate in their faith by how they build communitythroughtheir presence and service.Theintroductionof ourGamechangersChristianLeadershipProgram and our service program inYears 7 and 8 and the growth of ourminiMaristprogram in thePrimary schoolhighlights our commitmentto service and living faith in a practicalandtangible way.

Significantly, the highlight every week in our school is our PK-12FamilyMass where students, families and staff gather to celebrate and give thanks for our community.I warmly invite all families to consider coming to ourMass which commencesat 8.10ameveryThursdayin the Champagnat Chapel.

The Class of 2021

Congratulations to the Class of 2021 on their Graduation! This significant milestone was celebrated at Optus Stadium on Wednesday 20 October. It was a fantastic evening commencing with Graduation Mass, followed by dinner, the presentation of the Class of 2021 and Major Awards. We wish our Year 12s all the best for their future beyond ֱ, we know that your time spent at ֱ has prepared them well for what may lie ahead.

Our Year 12 ATAR students have now completed their Semester Two Exams and have received feedback from their teachers. We wish them the best of luck as they prepare for their upcoming WACE exams.

Year 10 Adventure Camp

Week 1 saw our Year 10 cohort depart for a week down south in beautiful Karridale to take part in our annual Year 10 Adventure Camp. Run by the Outdoor Education Group, this camp provides our young people with an opportunity to not only challenge but extend themselves in a safe and supportive environment. With the key aims of developing relationships, leadership skills, resilience and independence, this camp certainly provided the Year 10s with experiences that supported their self-development and transition to becoming young adults within our ֱ community.

Our Year 10s faced a number of challenges – be that physical, emotional or mental – but their strong sense of self belief, support of their peers and their desire to achieve more than they think, was resoundingly evident in all they undertook. Activities included: rock climbing, caving, high ropes, canoeing, abseiling and plenty of ‘bush bashing’ hiking – and whilst these activities were tough, the sense of accomplishment and achievement was outstanding and a privilege to witness. The feedback from students relating to the development of their peer relationships has been very positive. They have all expressed that they have strengthened existing friendships and provided them with the opportunity to get to know others in their group that they may not have known as well before departing camp. The vibe around the camp site was buzzing and they were excited to progress to Year 11 with such strong and positive bonds with each other.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Year 10s for the way in which they conducted themselves across this week. The level of maturity, respect and kindness that was displayed reflects that these young men and women are developing into well rounded young adults and members of our community. Each student reflected and embodied our Marist values in all they undertook, and it was an absolute pleasure working with our young people on this camp. I was impressed with the way in which this cohort of students presented themselves, and that positive attitude they displayed all week – I am very proud of the way in which they represented themselves and the College.

Thank you is also extended to the ֱ staff that assisted and accompanied our Year 10’s on this camp. Our staff played many roles on camp and enabled our students to achieve their goals and push themselves outside of their comfort zones. Thank you for your support and being away from your families to ensure that the 10s had such a memorable experience.

2022 Guild Representatives

Guild Representative nominations for 2022 have begun for students from Years 7 – 11. Students seeking leadership opportunities in their Guild are encouraged to apply. Successful applicants will work closely with the Year 12 Leadership Team, PCG teachers and Guild Coordinators in 2022.

Students can nominate via an online form which has been sent out through direct messages this week. Students will also undertake an interview as a part of the process.

This is an opportunity for students to build on their leadership skills and represent their cohort in school wide initiatives. Please discuss this opportunity with your child and encourage them to apply.

ֱ News Term 4 Week 2: From the Leader of Primary

I had the great privilege of attending our Year 12 graduation event at Optus Stadium on Wednesday evening, and it was so beautiful to see families, staff, and studentsgather togetherto celebrate the achievements and contributions of the Class of 2021. Graduationis one of those special momentsthat can become a real marker in life, meaning we can sometimes drift through the busyness oflifeand it is only during the significant moments we pause to reflect on all things, and sometimes even wonder how we gothere so quickly.

Our first words, first steps, first day of school, last day of primary school, are all wonderful moments to take stock and reflect on the journey our children (and us as parents) have been on. We are very much looking forward to celebrating the primary graduation of our own students in just a few short weeks, and I’m sure the celebration and emotion in the air during that occasion will match what we saw on Wednesday.

St. John Henry ֱ Feast Day

Last week we had the most wonderful opportunity to gather as a whole school community in the Marcellin gymnasium to celebrate the Feast Day of St. John Henry ֱ. It was such a beautiful sight to see the oldest and youngest students of our College in the one building, and the rendition of Sub Tuum at the conclusion of mass was one of the best I have heard in my time at ֱ. Following mass, students were able to partner up with their buddies to take part in some wonderful activities centred around designing and creating a square foot garden prototype as part of our STEM Festival.

It was a great day of learning, inspired by St. John Henry’s rich life as a scholar and master of learning, as well as a beautiful day of community. Thank you to all teachers and families for their support on the day, as well as our Leader of Learning, Miss Katya Anderson, for her contributions in organising the day.

Year3 Blue Assembly

This morning we celebrated a wonderful assembly with 3 Blue presenting an amazing ABBA inspired item on the story of the Prodigal Son. It was a very creative way to demonstrate to students the importance of forgiving others, and how God is always there to show love and forgiveness to us.

We also acknowledged our participants and award winners in last term’s ‘Have Sum Fun’ online maths competition, as well as a host of students who have already impressed their teachers this term with merit awards.

With only one term left to, we hope all of our students can continue to work hard and finish strongly in their learning right up until the last day!

Marcellin Award

This week we awarded the Marcellin Award to Billie Wyeth in Year 3. Billie showed great leadership skills and courage when she spoke to our whole school at assembly this morning about her experiences with Dyslexia, and how this has impacted her learning. She shared a video with the school which helped to give students an understanding of dyslexia, and her honest, touching reflections resonated with students across the school. October is the month where we can raise awareness of dyslexia and other related learning disorders.

We congratulate Billie for sharing her personal message with us today, and inspiring her classmates to think of others. You are a very deserving recipient of the Marcellin Award Billie!

This morning students explored a number of topics including the importance of understanding our values, and how just the littlest moments in life can make the biggest difference. I am very excited about the commitment and desire of our students to affect great change in our community.

Class Allocations 2022

In Term 4, teachers will begin looking at class groupings for 2022. Many factors are considered when selecting class placements for students and each child’s best interests are the main priority when these decisions are made. Class placements are made in consultation with all year level teachers and significant time and consideration is given to this task. Class placement is made with due consideration of gender, pastoral needs, social and emotional needs, special learning needs, and relationships.

Ifyou believethat your child has needs that require consideration, pleasearrange a meeting to discuss this with their classroom teacher early in Term4or contact me via email atlisa.mcclue@newman.wa.edu.au.
