ÐãÐãÖ±²¥ News Term 3 Week 2: From the Leader of Wellbeing Primary

Welcome back! I hope that you all enjoyed a restful holiday break. We have had a brilliant start to Term 3 and I look forward to these 10 weeks being filled with diverse learning opportunities and many occasions to celebrate as a community.

I extend my gratitude to all staff and parents who took part in the Parent Teacher Interviews on the first day back. This was an opportunity for all parents to engage in conversation with classroom teachers to discuss students’ academic progress as part of the growth of the whole child within the school environment. We welcome the partnership between home and school as integral in the development and success of each and every child.

Faction Cross Country Carnival

This term we are pleased to welcome Mrs Jemma Bulmer to the Lavalla team as our Physical Education Teacher. I wish to thank her for the excellent start to the Athletics Program this term with her successful organisation and running of the Faction Cross Country Carnival last week. Knox Faction are to be congratulated on their impressive effort on the day, resulting in an excellent win! At today’s Assembly, we also acknowledged the Age Group Champions who were awarded their medallions. to see the list of Age Champions and more photos from the day.

All students are acknowledged for their enthusiastic participation in the event and the spirit with which they competed with their peers and supported their faction. Congratulations to those students selected to represent the College at the Cross Country Carnival later this month.

Year 3-6 Assembly – Item Year 4 Red

Today Year 4 Red led the Lavalla Campus Assembly. Their item focused on STEM, gearing up to the building excitement of all students about next week’s . Thank you Mr Harvie and students of Year 4 Red.

Lavalla STEM Festival

At Lavalla, students will be building Arcade Games out of cardboard inspired by Caine’s Arcade. Planning begins today and we look forward to seeing what they come up with next week!

Marcellin Award

Congratulations Aadil Thekkayil from 6 Green who was acknowledged today in receiving the Lavalla Campus Marcellin Award.

Aadil is always respectful to peers and teachers. He has a way of quietly checking in on their peers to see if they are okay and always take time to ask how he can help. Aadil always behaves responsibly, setting very high expectations with his behaviour. He doesn’t seek recognition, he sees a need and acts on this because it is the right thing to do. His peers often acknowledge how caring he is and are grateful to have him as a classmate. Aadil is a quiet achiever in all aspects of school life who is truly a wonderful example for everyone in our community.

The Marcellin Award at Lavalla is presented at campus assemblies to one student selected by the Leadership Team from submitted nominations.

The Arts

Lavalla students have a busy term ahead in the area of The Arts. We have many students representing the College individually and in groups at the Catholic Performing Arts Festival.

Students in Lavalla Choir and Lavalla Dance Troupe have loved being a part of preparations for the PALS Project and Wakkakiri in the lead up to significant performances this term.

The College supports our many gifted students in their participation in and we look forward to celebrating their talents this term.

ÐãÐãÖ±²¥ News Term 3 Week 2: From the Vice Principal

, Excursions and Incursions seek to provide students with an authentic, in the world, application of their learning. On the holidays I had the honour of touring New York City with our Arts students and staff. I also followed the Humanities Tour of Sydney and Canberra closely. Over and above the educational outcomes presented, every member of staff commented on the independence, communication skills, resilience and initiative the students develop very quickly to support the group they are travelling with. Our students certainly lived our as they embraced the challenges presented and celebrated new found friendships, new learning and new experiences.

Catholic Arts

The Performing Arts Festival for Catholic Schools and Colleges seeks to provide students with specific ‘performance platforms’ where they have the unique opportunity to give of their very best and perform to a public audience. Open to both Primary and Secondary school students, the performance categories encompass choral, drama, musical, instrumental, vocal and dance aspects of the Performing Arts. Approximately 18,000 students enter the Festival each year. ÐãÐãÖ±²¥ supports this event in our quest to ensure students of have a platform to showcase their talents, represent the College and their families and participate in a highly regarded event and festival. My thanks to staff and students who attended the Opening Mass and my best wishes to every student, individual or group, who has nominated to perform. We look forward to sharing this experience with you.

Code of Conduct

A reminder to all families that the can be accessed via the College website. The Code is mandated by Catholic Education Western Australia and the application of the Code extends to all staff, students, parents, guardians, caregivers and volunteers.

The Code seeks to value the dignity of every person, foster positive relationships, ensuring confidentiality and accountability and supports professional boundaries. Events held during school hours AND outside of school hours that are associated with the College are also supported by the Code of Conduct. Any perceived breaches of the Code can be discussed with any member of the Senior Leadership Team. ÐãÐãÖ±²¥ Social Media Platforms

The College uses Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to celebrate and showcase learning, connect with families (prospective and current) and to stay in contact with past students. We know social media platforms are a highly effective way to engage with all members in our College, Marist and wider community. The Code of Conduct extends to all social media platforms and it is important that if you have feedback for the College that it is directed to a relevant member of staff. As adults, we must role model appropriate online behaviours for our children and give the College an opportunity to respond directly to any concerns or feedback.

ÐãÐãÖ±²¥ News Term 3 Week 2: From the Deputy Principal Wellbeing Secondary

Welcome back, I hope students had an enjoyable break and have come back energised for Term 3. The start of term sees us continue to hold Year 10 Subject Selection interviews. I would like to thank all the staff involved in the process, particularly Mr Farley and Mr Geekie. In Week 3 we will be holding our . I strongly encourage students to get involved on the day and enjoy the opportunity to be out of classes with their peers on what promises to be a great day for the Guilds.

The start of term is a good time to remind people of the resources available to help children have safe and enjoyable experiences online. If you have not already done so, I would strongly advise parents to visit the and use some of the resources offered.

Finally, a reminder that if families have any questions regarding their child, please do not hesitate to contact the College. Classroom/Pastoral Care teachers, Leader of Wellbeing and our Counselling Team are available to help students with any problems they may be having or to provide guidance for their studies.

Humanities Tour / Arts Tour

Over the break we saw two College tours take place; the visited Sydney & Canberra while the visited New York. Reports from staff and students have been hugely positive and I hope our students have taken away some great memories from their time away. I was also very pleased to receive feedback from members of the public about our students on these tours. Our students were complimented on the way they conducted themselves in public areas and the manner in which they carried themselves. While it is always nice to receive such positive feedback as a school, these comments really compliment the families in our community and the children they are raising.

Counselling and Wellbeing Team

Returning to school after the holidays can be a time of readjustment for many students. Supporting your child to have a regular school routine will help them to transition back to school and maintain good habits throughout the term. for some tips on how you can assist your child to develop a regular routine and reduce potential school-related stress.

Thank you to all students and coaches on a great Term 2 of NAS Winter Sport. We had many teams show great improvement over the season with most playing off in the finals. Congratulations to the Year 7A Netballers and Year 7 Girls Floorball teams for winning Premierships. NAS Sport recommences in Term 1 2020.

Year 12 Human Biology Excursion

On Monday the Year 12 Human Biology class visited the Harry Perkins Institute. Students worked in the lab, where they set up and ran biotechnological processes to better understand how mutations can be identified. to read more and see more photos from the day.

Year 11 & 12 High Achievers Breakfast

On Wednesday morning students in Years 11 and 12 who have demonstrated outstanding academic commitment and achievement throughout the year were invited to a celebratory breakfast. Over breakfast students shared their successes and strategies and engaged with like-minded individuals, forming a network of support and encouragement for their remaining time at the College. Students were congratulated by Mr Fitzpatrick, Mr Lynch and their Leaders of Wellbeing.

K-6 STEM Festival

As part of Science Week 2019 (Week 4), students in Kindy – Year 6 will be involved in a STEM Festival. The day is implemented to reinforce the important key learning area of Science.

Year 11 Dinner Dance

In the last week of Term 2, all of the Year 11 students headed to Hillarys dressed in their finest. If you were at the AQWA function room that night, you would have seen the gents looking professional in their suites and ties and the ladies looking spectacular in their stunning dresses.

At the start of the night, we enjoyed ice cold beverages as well as the privilege to explore the massive aquarium. As lots of you may know, AQWA is an amazing place, but to have it all to ourselves was quite special.
After the exploring of the aquarium, we were led to our tables. After some important thankyous and a prayer, everyone enjoyed the massive buffet. Fortunately for the Year 11 cohort, the AQWA staff knew how to prepare a meal. The food was amazing!

After dinner we all headed onto the dance floor and to the photo booth. While some students were tearing it up on the hard wood floor, others were taking memorable high school photos. Both the photographer and the DJ did more than an awesome job to satisfy the students expectations of the night. As the night came to an end, the DJ played Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody at full volume, and the whole year group danced around the speakers and sung. It was an excellent end to the already legendary night.

From the excellent catering to the final finishing song, we had heaps of fun. The Year 11 Dinner Dance was a night to remember, it was utterly sensational and I’m sure I can say for everyone that we all had a great time.
