秀秀直播 News Term 4 Week 4: From the Principal

Cyclic Review

The College has just undergone a School Cyclic Review conducted by Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA). A School Cyclic Review focuses on the effectiveness of a school鈥檚 engagement with self-review, the impact of self-review on school improvement and the future directions for the improvement of student outcomes that the school has identified. The data sources for this review included parents, College Advisory Council, staff, and students coupled with the College鈥檚 own self review statement, Strategic Improvement Plan, Annual School Improvement Plans and Annual Reports.

The feedback from the review across the domains of Catholic Identity, Education, Community and Stewardship were very affirming for the College. The review report specifically identified the College鈥檚 Vision for Learning Shine Through Discovery – Let Your Light Shine as a clearly defined strategic and operational direction of the College. It notes Teaching and Learning are student driven and data informed and a learning culture that encourages growth in all students is clearly visible. Underpinning this strategic priority is our renewed focus on Catholic Identity through the implementation of our Ministry Plan and commitment to the formation of the spiritual life of students and staff.

Strategic Plan

The timing of this review is significant as we enter the consultation phase of our new strategic plan. 秀秀直播 is owned by the Trustees of the Marist Brothers and governed by Marist Schools Australia (MSA). We are a member of Catholic Education Commission Western Australia (CECWA) and as such receive our Federal and State funding as a group member of CECWA. Our strategic priorities for the future will need to focus on the sustainability of our PK-12 College as an affordable Catholic School that provides excellent teaching and learning for students. In an increasingly competitive educational precinct, it is an imperative that our College is agile and innovative, creating opportunities for our students while supporting their wellbeing as they navigate their learning and life journey.

Consultation

This week we completed our first round of consultation with parents and staff on their priorities for the next strategic plan. Parent attendance was low but the feedback nonetheless salient and constructive. We intend to curate the information we have collated to date and then seek further feedback from our families in the new year. For the interest of parents, the following questions were put to those who attended:

  1. In your experience, what is unique about 秀秀直播?
  2. Why did you enrol your son/daughter at 秀秀直播?
  3. What does 秀秀直播 do best of all?
  4. If you were Principal of 秀秀直播 for a day, what would you change/fix?
  5. What school factors do you believe contribute most positively to your child鈥檚 learning at school?
  6. How might the school further assist your child鈥檚 learning?
  7. What can 秀秀直播 do to further assist you as a parent?
  8. How would you describe your overall experience as a parent of a child/children attending 秀秀直播?
  9. Would you recommend 秀秀直播 to your friends? Please give reasons to support your response.

We will also be engaging in student voice in determining our priorities for the future. What was clear from the consultation and the recommendations from the cyclic review, was the need to ensure that the College is consistent in its application of teaching and learning. To this end, our work with teachers to build their individual capacity as professionals, aligning our practices, and to grow the students鈥 learning experience is our intent.

Developing New Learning Experiences

Singapore Learning Immersion

Twenty five Years 9 and 10 students and four members of staff have been in Singapore this week as part of a newly developed partnership with Republic Polytechnic (RP). RP is a post school educational institution that seeks to nurture innovative, entrepreneurial and cultured professionals. Our partnership and this learning immersion aims to foster and challenge our students and staff to be resilient, global thinkers; students who are agile, collaborative and embracing of the demands of the 21st Century. The program for the week was centered on collaborating with RP students on problem-based learning activities. The program aims to develop the following skills:

  • Effective self-directed learning and critical problem inquiry
  • Effective collaboration and problem-solving
  • Effective reasoning, argumentation and presentation

Working and collaborating with students in this industry-based learning environment fostering creativity and entrepreneurial skills has been life changing for many of our students.

The benefits of this experience will be in shaping our learning programs into the future. Staff will become more adept in creating learning experiences that foster the aforementioned skills. Supporting these programs will be learning spaces that reflect our strategic intent as exemplified in the development of our new Learning Hub (due for completion December 2020). To this end our students across our College will benefit as we continue to develop our teachers and students to be agile and flexible learners in our ever-changing world.

秀秀直播 News Term 4 Week 4: From the Ministry, Outreach and Advocacy Team

Month of November

During the month of November, Catholics are invited to remember all those who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith. Beginning the month of November is the feast of All Saints (Friday 1 November), followed by the feast of All Souls (Saturday 2 November).

On 1 November, we remembered the countless multitude of men, women and children, including our families, friends, 秀秀直播 and Marist community, who are now in heaven. We continue to be inspired by the qualities they revealed in their lives: humility, a concern for justice, gentleness, purity of heart, mercy, and courage. We take comfort in knowing that from their home in heaven they intercede for us still.

You are invited to join our Thursday morning community Masses at 8.10am to pray with and for those who have gone before us, both as saints, and those who you would like to remember in this month of November. Throughout November, staff and students are invited to write a prayer, or the name of a loved-one, and place it in a sealed box which will be placed at the front of the altar for each of our Masses in November. This box will be in the foyer of the Champagnat Chapel for the month of November. In this way, we as a community are able to unite our prayers in support and remembrance of each other, and to those who have traveled this way before us.

Remembrance Day

At 11am on 11 November 1918, the guns on the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of continuous warfare. Remembrance Day falls on the 11th of November each year. On the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, a minute’s silence is observed and dedicated to those soldiers who died fighting to protect the nations they served. Red poppies are worn on blazers, shirts, jumpers and other items of clothing on Remembrance Day to remember those who died during a war. Poppies were among the first plants that came from the battlefields of northern France and Belgium during World War I. On this day, we remember and pray for all those known and unknown who lost their lives in war.

Mary our Good Mother, pray for us.

Year 5 Leadership Retreat

The Year 5 Leadership Retreat was held on Friday 25 October, run by the 24:7 School Ministry team in the Lavalla hall. It was a fun day of games, activities and faith formation.

With the help of some Superheroes, there were examples of good leaders that display important characteristics that we can learn from. We looked at what qualities they show and also looked at the greatest superhero of all, Jesus, who showed us all the great leadership qualities in his life.

It was a fantastic day overall and the Year 5 cohort gained a lot from their experience, ready to take on leadership opportunities in 2020!

St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal

The annual St Vincent de Paul Society Christmas Appeal provides hope, comfort and dignity to over 3000 families in Western Australia who will be struggling during the Christmas season. As a Catholic school educating in the Marist Tradition, 秀秀直播 seeks to reach out and serve those in our community following the example set by Jesus in the Scriptures.

Items for the St Vincent de Paul Society Christmas Appeal will be collected across the College鈥檚 three campuses at Marian, Lavalla and Marcellin. In 2019, 秀秀直播 will be supporting the St Vincent de Paul Society at both St Cecilia鈥檚 Church in the Parish of Floreat / Wembley, as well as at Our Lady of the Rosary, Doubleview.

A letter was sent home to parents outlining the items requested for each campus, as well as details about collection points.

2020 Sacramental Programs

According to Archdiocesan Guidelines, children who have been Baptised Catholics are prepared for the Sacrament of Reconciliation in Year 3, for First Communion in Year 4 and for Confirmation in Year 6. These Sacraments are to be received in this order.

Under the Archdiocesan Policy (2008), schools prepare children for the Sacraments in their Religious Education Program and children go to their own Parish to receive the Sacraments. The Local Zone of Priests which represents the parishes of Subiaco, City Beach, Claremont, Cottesloe/Mosman Park, Doubleview, Nedlands, Shenton Park and Floreat/Wembley has been implementing this policy over a number of years, as have other zones.

As 秀秀直播 is not a Parish school, parents will need to approach their parish to enrol their child to receive Confirmation, Communion and Reconciliation. For this reason 秀秀直播 does not conduct its own Confirmation, First Communion or First Reconciliation ceremonies. Click here for the full list of Parish contacts.

If parents have any queries concerning the above, please contact the Acting Religious Education Coordinator Primary, Renae Zelich renae.zelich@newman.wa.edu.au

Personal Devices and Communication

A reminder that we ask for all communication between parents and students during the school day to be directed via the Campus office by calling 9416 9700. Utilising teacher emails or Seesaw will not necessarily relay the message in time.

During school time, students utilise their designated device (iPad) as a learning tool under the direction of their teachers. Using their iPads for non-school related communication during school hours is considered misuse of their device. We are aware that students may also have other personal devices such as mobile phones or smart-watches, please note that neither is a school requirement or uniform item. If parents choose to provide children with these devices, the school鈥檚 position remains that they are not to be used for communication throughout the school day. These devices should be stored either in their school bag or students may ask for a safe place to be provided by the classroom teacher.

While the College will endeavour to ensure that all private property is treated with respect and care, the College accepts no responsibility for lost, stolen or damaged phones or devices.

Thank you for your continued support in this matter, please contact your child鈥檚 classroom teacher or myself if you have any queries or concerns.

The girls played four rounds demonstrating a high level of skill, sportsmanship and enthusiasm.

Participant, Rio Angus (Year 6) described the day:

“The girls had four rounds to play not including the bye. The girls did really well throughout the day, with 秀秀直播 White getting into the Grand Final and 秀秀直播 Blues giving the competition their best shot too. Good job girls!鈥

Values for Life: Operation Empathy

Yesterday, the Year 4 Unit took part in a day of team building and empathy workshops presented by the Year 4 Teachers and Tim Powell from Values for Life. The first phase of the morning involved an 鈥楢mazing Race鈥 style challenge where students had to follow clues and problem solve in order to achieve a common goal. They were then led in an interactive workshop on empathy and celebrating differences led by Tim.

We were also thrilled to welcome our Year 4 parents in the evening for a workshop led by Tim, reflecting on strategies and approaches to resilience and self control following-on from the learning experiences of the children from the day.

Many thanks to the Ms Davina Sankar, Mrs Sharon MacBean and Mr Scott Harvie for their organisation and facilitation of this day.

秀秀直播 News Term 4 Week 4: From the Leader of Wellbeing Early Childhood

The play-based learning that we foster in our classrooms at the Marian Campus provides opportunities for our students to actively and imaginatively engage with people, objects and the environment. When playing, children may be organising, constructing, manipulating, pretending, exploring, investigating, creating, interacting, imagining, negotiating and making sense of their worlds. Play-based learning looks different across the various year levels, but an observer of play-based learning is likely to see students actively engaged in experiences where choice, wonder and delight are evident in their interactions.

Pre Kindergarten Information Session

This week, we welcomed new and existing families to the campus for an information session on our 2020 Pre Kindergarten program. Thank you to the Primary Social Committee who provided a fantastic morning tea which enabled these parents to interact with one another and ask questions about the program. If any parents were unable to attend, your Orientation Pack is available at the Marian Campus reception. Pre Kindergarten will be offered as a 1-day or 2-day program on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays in 2020. Limited places are still available.

Kindergarten Orientation

Those children enrolled at 秀秀直播 for 2020 are invited to attend an Orientation Session on Monday 18 November from 9.00am – 10.30am. Children will spend time with their Kindergarten teachers to familiarise themselves with their classroom learning environment while parents will be provided with an Information Session with all the relevant information to ensure a smooth and successful transition for the children into the College. A light morning tea will also be provided for parents by our Primary Social Committee.

Count Us In

On Thursday, Year 1 and 2 students participated in a nationwide simultaneous song-singing event. The 鈥楥ount Us In鈥 program sees students from all around Australia sing the same song titled 鈥榃e are鈥, on the same day, at the same time. Thank you to Ms. Sarah Spencer for her preparation of the students and organisation of the event. It was a fun-filled activity that promotes the value of music education in the lives of children.

Mobile Phones

As you may be aware, the WA Education Minister, Sue Ellery announced that a ban on mobile phones will be implemented for all State Schools from 2020 onwards. Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA) Executive Director, Dr Debra Sayce, has reaffirmed that CEWA Principals and leadership teams are responsible for setting policy on mobile phones at their schools, in consultation with their communities.

At 秀秀直播, we are constantly monitoring the use of the technology at the school and how we can best support, educate and protect our students. As of 2020, students will not be allowed to have their mobile devices on them during the school day. Students may choose to leave their devices at home or place them in their bag/locker throughout the school day.

Your Move Conference

Last week, three of the 秀秀直播 Nature team attended a conference about sustainability and transport. The conference 鈥淵our Move鈥 was facilitated by Millennium Kids and hosted by the City of Stirling. We were lucky enough to work with local primary schools to discuss and create solutions to reduce the environmental impact of transportation to and from school.

Did you know that transportation accounted for 14% of our carbon footprint? Unfortunately, in Australia this figure is increasing at a rate of 2.5% per year. What can we do to help minimise our carbon footprint?

The two-day conference was informative, interesting and has helped the team to come up with many new ideas that we are excited to implement throughout the College this term and in 2020.

Thank you to Miss Monisse and Mrs Ognenis who attended the conference with us. Thank you to 秀秀直播 for offering us the opportunity to be involved in a dynamic and informative conference, and their ongoing support in making our community more and more environmentally aware.

Healthy Headspace: Part 2 鈥 Nutrition & Physical Activity

Good nutrition during the teenage years is critical in supporting physical development, and can also help with sleeping patterns, energy levels, and overall health and wellbeing. During adolescence, the need for energy, protein and vitamins increases, so it鈥檚 important to have a range of healthy foods available. In order for teens to get all of the nutrients they need, they should be eating mainly from the core food groups, including vegetables, fruit, whole grains, proteins (e.g. lean meats, poultry, fish, eggs, tofu, nuts, seeds), and dairy products or their alternatives (mostly reduced fat).

Physical activity is also essential for both overall health and mental wellbeing. This can be anything that gets the body moving and increases heart rate. Activities such walking, playing team sports with friends, dancing or swimming, will help your child to release stress and improve their mood. Even small amounts of physical activity can provide a distraction from unhelpful thoughts and improve concentration. You may be assist your child by helping them to find a physical activity that they will enjoy doing on a聽 regular basis.

Taking a family approach to eating well, along with the promotion of regular physical activity, helps teenagers to develop habits that will allow them to be both physically and mentally healthy into the future.
